Ughhhhhhh.

My skin is out of control. My only saving grace is that I apply make-up base and concealer like a pro, so I can hide it somewhat. I have the acne of a pubescent boy. I even cried today because it has gotten so bad. It's mainly around my chin and some on my forehead. I have nothing that's stressing me out and I'm not close to my period, so I am not sure why I am this terrible. I am going to make an appt with a dermatologist on Monday...but I really doubt they'll have anything that will help much. I had some acne in high school and birth control helped a lot. Now that I have the mirena, I don't do that obviously. I've tried Retin A, prescription strength Benzoyl Peroxide wash, and differin gel--nothing worked. The only thing thy has given me' perfect skin in the past is Bactrim pills. (it's a sulfa-drug of some sort--antibiotic maybe?) and you can't be on that long term so that had to stop. Pro activ didn't work either. Amy suggestions? Also--acne scars--they turn purple when I'm cold and look awful. Anything I can do for that? Derm recs?

Re: Ughhhhhhh.

  • So sorry dear... I had bad acne in HS too and BC did wonders. I have been on differen gel and I thought it sucked major. It didn't do crap for my skin. That being said, I was at one point on some benzo peroxide type cream that had to be kept in the fridge. The pharmacy would mix it in a little jar and I just had to keep it cold. I am not 100% sure what it was exactly, but your dermatologist may know. Since being off BC my skin gets all yucky now again and I used some regular face wash (Clean n Clear maybe) type that works really well. It has benzo peroxide in it too and it works pretty decent. I hope you get something good, but differin sucks big time IMO.

  • A couple of years ago I was in the same spot as you. My derm prescribed a 3 month run of Bactrim, and then I started using Differin in the morning and Duac at night. Duac is a combo benzoyl peroxide/clindamycin gel. I also was put on BCP's, and that helped tremendously.

Now I maintain with just the topical gels. I've been off BCP's for a year now, and unfortunately I'm getting more breakouts as more time passes off the pill. It's nowhere near like it was, though.

Good luck! I love my derm in Norman, so let me know if you want his name.

  • I'm sorry!  I'm in the same boat right now and it's so frustrating.  I see Dr. Gillum in Norman, I love him!  I haven't gone to see him about this yet, though.
  • What helped me was applying BP 10% and letting it sit for a few minutes before rinsing it off. I think i used a nuetrogena face mask/wash for that. I went to a derm in Norman and he told me it wasn't bad and that I would just outgrow it. I had acne on the back and BP would stain my clothing...even if I was careful. I told him I didn't want to use BP for that reason and that is what he prescribed at the end of the appt. Very annoying. 5 years later and I haven't outgrown it. Going on bcp help clear most of it up, but it has come back when I went off. It was not urice...same office.
  • I dread the day I go off of BC. I'm sure my face will explode.

I've found that if I use too many medicated/harsh products, my face gets worse. I use Cetaphil to wash, and then use a gentle moisturizer with a small percentage of salicylic acid morning and night. Also, drinking lots and lots of water has helped as well.

  • Hi, I'm new but I can completely relate! I always struggled with acne until two or three years ago when I started going to OU Physicians Dermatology. I see the physician assistant Heather Hennigan, but the actual dermatologist's name that I've seen is Raymond Cornelison. I've tried Retin-A, Bactrim, Pro Activ, etc as well before I started going here and now I'm on Minocycline and use a topical that I can't think of the name right now lol. But the OU Physicians Dermatology specialize in acne, so they should be able to help you. I have the same scars too, have you tried a bleaching cream? That's what I have used in the past and Heather told me about one at Wal-Mart last time I was in but I haven't went to get it yet. Hope this helps! Smile
  • I appreciate the responses!

@oklagirl--I have been using harsh acne cleansers and all I feel like I do is piss off my face to the point where it's worse than it was before.  Obviously they do NOT help me.   I am going to finish out my bottle of cleanser and hopefully that will be around the same time as my dermatology appointment.

I have an appointment on January 20.  I am PRAYING my face is at its worst when I go see her so she takes me seriously.  When I saw the dermatologist in high school, my face would always miraculously clear up a few days before my appointment.  I plan on going in there without a stitch of make up on.  If it's freezing outside my face should be nice and nasty looking!
