Meet our puppy! (aka Jasper) PIP

Jasper came home on Friday afternoon...I literally feel like we have a baby now...lol  He's the cutest thing ever, but definitely a lot of work already!  He had a really good first night in his crate, but whined a lot more last night...it's so heartbreaking, but from what I'm reading, it sounds like ignoring it is the best way to stop it...any tips welcome though!

Right after we chose him at the breeder:

  • Jasper is soooo cute! You are correct, you have to ignore it. I remember when I first got Sophie I was heartbroken too and I always wanted to give in and go get her, which made it harder. It took a few rough nights, but it does did eventually get better :) Congrats on your new family member!

  • Hes ADORABLE! I have been stalking your pics on FB and keep showing him to Mike. :-)

You are right about the ignoring him when he whines and it does get easier. Our big dog (who is 6) loves her crate. Its totally her safe haven.

    Congrats!!

  • Already saw on fb but he is SOO cute!! :)

I agree with the crate, it's best to just ignore it. Unfortunately Sammy didn't take well to being kenneled at all. After a few days it did get better and it would get to the point where he would cry less but he also got to the point where he refused to go in and we had to carry him in (which isn't good). :( One night we experimented with keeping him out of his kennel (when he was 4 months - got him at 3 months) and we haven't put him back in since. He doesn't mess with anything he's not suppose to, we really lucked out with that. We even gave his kennel to SIL bc they got a new puppy since Sammy doesn't use his at all. haha

  • We are crate people, all three of our dogs love their crate and are in them whenever we are gone. Here is the method that we used (came from a puppy obedience class we attended);

**Disclaimer: you may feel a little mean but it totally works**

Put puppy in crate next to your bed. Once he starts whining, stand behind the crate and pick it up so you are straddling it, give it three shakes each time saying NO. Set crate back down (firmly) and get back in bed. Soon puppy will whine again, get up and repeat. Soon enough they will get the picture and the whining will stop. I swear by this method, it has worked with all three of my dogs.

    GL!! Jasper is sooo cute!

Thanks for the tip!  Unfortunately his crate is way too big for either of us to straddle (42" long and about 2 1/2 ft. high)...we are keeping it in our family room per the breeder's rec.  I am hoping he does better tonight, and also that the whining lessens...it was sooo heartbreaking this morning hearing him!  I really don't want him to hate his crate, but feel like it's his little haven/space when he is grown.  He is a little love bug, but also a typical puppy troublemaker...lol  I will miss this tiny stage but am also looking forward to when he's a little older and more trainable.

    And thanks everyone!

  • Ok Carrie! I love him! And you.

Now take it to the pets board you B!

    LMAO!!!!

  • So adorable. I love the picture of him with the smusshie face.

Do you have the adjuster in his crate to make it smaller? It is good to have a smaller crate when they are little. It helps with housebreaking. Good luck with the puppy. We have been loving ours, especially as he is getting better with the pottytraining.

This was going to be my next questions also. If you don't be prepared to clean up a mess when you get home! I came home to a bed room full of poo one day and a puppy full of poo and it was not very pleasant! If you put them in a small crate when they are small they are less likely to potty in it. They don't like to sleep in their own mess.

I agree about making the crate as small as possible...we didn't like the idea of this but it really seemed to work-and our puppy was done being crate trained in less than a year!

  • oh my gosh Carrie, Jasper is adorable! Congrats!

Similar to others advice, I'd say:

-make the crate small enough so that he only has enough room to layout (like Ashlee said, this makes them less likely to have an accident in there b/c they don't want to be in their own filth); we have a 36" long kennel and Oscar was about 6 months old when we finally took out the divider for good.

-Definitely ingnore the whining at night, but since he is a puppy, I'd make sure you're taking him out in the middle of the night.  Rule of thumb I've heard is that for puppies: however many months they are old is typically how long they can hold their potty

-We used to keep Oscar's kennel in the family room and he slept there at night, but even at a year old he'd sometimes cry for no reason at night.  We ended up moving the crate into our bedroom and also put a blanket over it at night (so it's his "cave") and now he sleep throughout the night.  We honestly feel like he just wanted to be in the same room as us.

-For potty training, be sure to always go out the same door when you're taking him out to go potty, that way he recognizes that a certain door means potty.  For us, we made a bell ringer (a large bell and ribbon from JoAnne) and tied it to the potty door.  Everytime we went outside we'd sit Oscar at the door and hold his paw and make it ring the bell, seriously every single time.  That way he associated the bell-ring with going potty outside.  Now he as he's older, he knows if he rings the bell, we'll let him out.  For us it's been very convienent b/c you can hear the bell anywhere in our home (vs. a dog sitting by the door that you'd have to walk by and see).  In addition, we take the bell with us when we travel with him.  The first time we're somewhere new and going potty we'll take his paw and ring the bell then go out and then he recognizes (wherever we are) that is his potty-door.

Everyone has their own system for potty training, but I have to say, the bell approach has been amazing for us.

And like your OP said, puppies seriously seem like good practice for babies! Congrats! I'm sure you'll love being a doggy-momma!

  • OMG! He is so cute! Congrats guys!
