WWYD re gift and returns*clicky poll!*

My mom bought me this dress from Nordstrom's, even though I said I wasn't sure I wanted it and definitely didn't need it (mainly because of the price- $258 yikes!)

I'm debating if I should take it back, because I could get several things for that amount of money that I would wear more (especially at the Rack). I can only think of one or two times I could wear this, and I wouldn't want to wear it around the same people (if that makes sense.)

FWIW my mom is in Dallas and will never know if I take it back.

  • I voted to take it back, but I'm a very boring and practical kind of person :)

  • I voted take it back, but I don't know if you can use Nordstrom store credit at the Rack, so you might check that out.  (Even if you can't, I'd still take it back--it would be better to have stuff you really want/would wear or use often.)
  • I would definitely take it back if you don't think you will wear it much and could use other things. Sometimes I find it useful to break things down by "cost per wear" to determine value when deciding whether to keep things.

Ex. $100 high-heeled black boots that I've worn a maximum of ten times = $10 per wear = not a good value

    BUT

$150 low heeled brown boots that I have worn probably 200 times in the last two years = 75 cents per wear = good value

Here it becomes clear that wedding dresses are not a good value. ;)

  • love the breakdown austinmimi! Ill have to keep that one in my back pocket :)

And I voted take it back. But as pp said, I am also a  very practical kind of clothes shopper though. My other thought on it is, that even thought its a very cute black dress, after the next couple of seasons it may not be in style. Maybe you could find a black dress that is a little more timeless?

  • I voted keep it, but only if you LOVE it.  If not, it's definitely not worth it - return it.

    you are awesome.  ;)

FTR, I voted to return it - I buy cute dresses only to wear them only once.  very silly.

  • I voted to return it. It is a really cute dress, but like you said, how many times will you wear it. Also, you can have them return it to a gift card that can be used at Nordstrom or Nordstrom Rack.
  • I would keep it.  Practical gifts are boring.

    Ditto this.

  • Thanks for confirming what I thought I should do. I just took it back and got 6 pairs of socks, a tank top, 2 long pearl necklaces that I can wear long or doubled and together or separate, and a shirt for DH. And I still have $100 left to spend later!
