So, uh... bcp question (maybe tmi)

So what do you do if you vomit up a birth control pill? I took my pill Monday night and seconds later got sick (not from the pill, I was sick). I wonder if I should have then taken the next one? I took last night's on time.

  • Pretty sure you are ok. If you just missed the one and have taken all the rest, it should be fine. From what I remember, it matters if you miss more than 2-3 in a row.
  • I ditto Megan, I think if it's just one you're ok.

  • I think for some people, missing the day is okay. For others (like paranoid me or someone very fertile), it would be a good idea to take the next one in the pack. Or double up the next day (like they recommend if you've missed one). It will just mean your cycle will be one day shorter this month.

Agreed, you're probably fine but I would have doubled up the next night. Just be warned it can make you nauseous so have something in your stomach prior to taking the pill.

  • I have missed many days off and on and never got KU (I'm a very forgetful person). I would just say the same as others have, double up the next day. I think it will only really be a problem if you miss multiple days in a row.

  • What? You mean you didn't pick the pill out of your vomit and take it again? Stick out tongue Too much? (seriously, this is the first thing I thought when I read your post)

You'll be fine. Probably you shouldn't have sex tonight. But if you're throwing up, that may already be a given...

  • Take two the next day. Or use a back up method for the rest of the cycle. IF you want to be as careful as possible. There are people that have gotten pregnant taking the pill exactly right so nothing is foolproof, and any missed days can slightly increase your chance of an accidental pregnancy.

  • also - if you're worried about barfing up tomorrow's, you can take it as a suppository...except not up your ass.

There's really no delicate way to say that, is there?

    Feel better!

So I have an aunt who is a nurse, and at last nights get-together was telling us about the often hilarious things she's seen on birth control packages, and things doctors have had to tell their patients about the use of birth control pills and one of them was "don't put it in your vagina" (of course a cousin walked into the conversation only hears that last part. hilarious). Also, "don't give it to your boyfriend," and "taking 3 or 4 at the same time won't help,."  were on the list. So, according to my nurse aunt "putting it up your vagina" isn't such a good method.  Wink

  • I did that once and ended up going off of it (not intentionally obviously). My period came a little earlier, bled heavier/longer, etc. So I waited a month to have unprotected sex again just to be safe.

I have never heard of putting it up the va-jay-jay and I would say that is a questionable method of taking the pills. Although you may get mucous membrane absorption, it is not made to go that way and it is not reliably absorbed. If you can't take them orally due to the illness, then may want to stop the pack, ride out the cycle, (have period, use back up ) and start fresh with a new pack on the first Sunday after the period starts or on the day the period starts if no longer puking. Sorry you are so ill :(

I've had two different OBGYNs tell me that it's ok for one or two pills if you're ill. But more than that and to just give up and start over next cycle.

Yeah, I'm sure she was talking about everyday use as opposed to one time when sick, though I'd never heard of doing that if you're vomiting.  Very interesting.

  • This conversation is cracking me up. The problem is I'm on those 90-days per cycle pill thingamabobs, so doing anything for the rest of the "month" is a pain. I know I'm going to screw up those days if I take extra. Clearly, a backup method is in order (if I ever get over this dang plague).
