Having a hard time falling asleep
Typically I can go to sleep anywhere any time. I literally can just say to myself, "Ok, go to sleep" and within 5 minutes I am out, but the last several nights I've had the hardest time falling asleep. Last night (well this morning I guess) I didn't fall asleep until after 5am. Jason woke up to go to the bathroom and saw me still sitting up watching TV and was so confused. Now it's after midnight and I'm wide awake again. I just took a few melatonin thinking that would help, but so far it hasn't. It's not like I'm sleeping in late either or taking naps; after falling asleep at 5am this morning, I woke up at 10am, so it's not like I've gotten too much sleep lately.
So, what do you all do when you just can't seem to fall asleep?

Re: Having a hard time falling asleep
I can't offer any advice since I have insomnia, but I figured I'd join your no sleepy party. It's been worse the last few days for me. I cannot seem to shut down. I have pills but I hate taking them.
Supposedly turning off the TV, taking a shower, going to the bathroom and stretching all help. I can't sleep w/o TV though so I think that's a bunch of BS.
I really wanna sleep too, I have work in the morning, bah.
I put on the mp3 player. I have a few progressive relaxation things on there that help me. My problem is that I can't turn my head off. The progressive relaxation makes me concentrate on letting go.
I hate Ross a little bit, for his ability to go to sleep. He had a problem with insomnia growing up, and did "sleep training." He said it took him a couple of years. If he laid down and didn't fall asleep within 15 minutes, he'd get up and do something for a period of time (15-30 minutes maybe?) then try again. And continue until he was asleep. And his doctor said to limit the number of things he does in bed, no reading, watching tv, etc. And it worked for him. He's out literally within 3-5 minutes of his head hitting the pillow.
Me? Usually an 30-60 minutes. Bleh.

A few things that have helped me over the years:
If you do need to use the TV, turn the channel to something with a soothing monotone. DH needs the TV on, so we normally use Forensic Files. I find the light from the screen distracting, so a blanket or towel blocking the light is helpful, and keep the volume low. I also like Loveline on the radio. Don't know why, but it works for me too!
Counting backwards the number of breaths from something absurdly high (i.e: 300) helps too - as I get more relaxed realize I end up counting enter series of 10 (like the 240's) over again a few times!
Showers only work to wind me down if the light is off. It feels womb-like, and I'll also often sit down in the tub and let the water fall on me for a while.
I *can't* sleep if lights are on - the cable box has an OBNOXIOUSLY bright light that was shining on me (I could do shadow puppets with it, I swear!). I pointed it away from me and was able to fall asleep faster.
Finally, if it's really bad I get up and do some reading OUT of bed for 30 mins, and try again later...
I have a very hard falling alseep- nothing seems to help me. Unless I'm just exhausted.
Although sometimes I take an Excridine PM and that will make it easier to sleep- doesn't help me go to sleep- but helps me stay asleep and feel rested in the morning.
But the problem is, if my mind is racing I loose track of what number I'm at, and if I do end up going to 20 I count down really fast to 0, because I know I just have to start all over again.
There's my dose of crazy for the day lol.
I swear, eventually it works though!
