Qs for bloggers

I'm thinking about starting up a blog again, but I'm clueless about sites that host blogs.  For you guys that have blogs, what site do you use?  My main requirement is that it's free, but I'm also looking for something easy to use and would prefer the option to be able to make some posts private.  Any recommendations?

Re: Qs for bloggers

  • I use Blogger. I looked at Wordpress too and it just didn't seem as user-friendly for what I wanted.

I like Blogger because of how easy it was to customize it. I chose my layout, I chose which sidebar ad ons I wanted, I found a template online and just pasted the HTML code, etc. As a reader, I typically think its easier to navigate Blogger blogs. Almost every Wordpress blog I've visited has had some issue with following or searching within the blog.

Posting in Blogger is really easy as well. You can enter your post in the Compose window or if you wanted to get all fancy with HMTL info, its just a click away. The menu bar (bold, italic, numbering, etc.) is almost exactly the same as it is on here or on TK. When I upload a blog, I add a printer friendly link (a google doc to print the recipe) and a picture and its less than 5 clicks to get both on there.

I don't know about the ability to keep some posts private, but I know you have the option of typing out a post and never actually posting it to your blog. Blogger will save it as a draft and its accessible under Edit Posts and lists that its a draft in orange.

  • I use Blogger, too.  It's really easy to use and customize and has the reader function where you can follow other people's blogs and their most recent posts automatically come up in your reader when you log in.

I had one with LiveJournal a really long time ago.  I haven't logged in or checked that site out in a long time, but I think it's less customizable and you have to pay to get a lot of the good features.

  • I used blogger after I found out I could sign in with my Gmail account.  And it's easy to use.

  • Ok, it sounds like I need to check out blogger!

I think the saved draft is probably fine, the site I used to blog on allowed 'private' entries and I used it maybe twice in the two years I was blogging daily.  It was just something I remembered from then.  It seems like Blogger has more features than I'd ever need (HTML? uh, sure....)

  • I like blogger/ blogspot too cause omg, who doesn't love a google product.  I've used it for my own personal use.

I've put all my clients on wordpress though.  It's by far the best for extra features and doubling as a website.  You also can't beat how much customization you can do with it.
