My grandma died New Year's Eve. It was actually a beatiful event, and although there was some sadness there was so much to celebrate. She made it through Christmas and the baptism and we have those memories.
My uncle decided last minute to fly down Tuesday. He was unable to make it due to the storms in the northeast and so he finally got there thursday night. He saw her and talked to her and sometime Friday morning she slipped into a coma. I got to sit and talk with her for about an hour before she died. My mom and uncle were with her when she did die. They talked in hospice about how people have an agenda before they die of how they want it to happen. I believe she wanted all the family together and she held on until we were all there.
I wanted to share what my mom wrote in an email with you, it was really beautiful:
"Mama and I argued a lot but she taught the entire family many things - have many hobbies and interests and continue to be inquisitive into your old age, get to your bucket list early, be passionate about things and don't be afraid to stand up for what you believe in.
She remarked to one of her doctors one time that she wasn't the brightest bulb in the chandelier and he responded. "Oh no Doris, you ARE the chandelier". The light has gone out but the sparkle remains."
Anyway, I really appreciate the support I got here while I was going through this.

Husbands should be like Kleenex: Soft, strong, and disposable.
The contrast of your sweet sig pic with the vagina quote directly below it is making me inappropriately snicker...I'm going to assume your grandmother is the type that would appreciate the laughter.
I'm sorry for your loss but so glad that she went peacefully and that you now have these precious memories
So sorry for your loss. What your mom wrote is very sweet and the picture is even sweeter.
What is this wetness on my cheeks?
That's beautiful, Winger. I'm sorry for your loss but grateful for your experience.
The hair grows in thick where the horn used to be.
Oh I love her, and look at her awesome manicure! Go Doris!
Sounds like a special lady who led a full, happy life. I'm so glad you all were with her as she set sail. Take care, winger.
That is a seriously beautiful picture and the e-mail with it makes it just that much more poignant. i'm sorry for your loss, but glad you have some awesome memories to keep with you.
I wouldn't have noticed the manicure, but you're right Fitty, it's really va-va-voom!
That picture will be a family classic. The fact that Ryker is wearing a Santa suit makes it that much better.
The nerve!

I really really love that picture. Your grandma and Ryker make quite a pair.
She sounds like a wonderful woman and I'm glad she was able to spend some quality time with her family before she had to go. I love the "you ARE the chandelier" quote a lot. It seems very fitting for someone sporting that manicure.

Ditto everyone else; so very sweet. And you're so lucky that your grandmother got to meet your child. Your grandma sounds like she lived an awesome life.
(ps. It took me like 20 full minutes to understand the subject of this post)

She went down in style with those nails. cha cha cha
So, she and my grandfather both willed their bodies to the U of Miami. We will get her ashes in about a year. We will combine their ashes and split them up 3 ways- 1/3 to the family plot in Key West, 1/3 to the family plot in Miami and the final 1/3 we will gather together to cast out into the ocean at Biscayne Bay where they used to fish. i feel like I am in a made for TV movie.
