Flying with an infant

For those of you that have flown with an infant, did you purchase a separate seat for your child?

I am leaning toward getting W his own seat, but DH thinks that we don't need to.  If you didn't get a seat what did you do with the car seat.  Check it? Or were you able to check it at the gate?

Re: Flying with an infant

  • I flew with Amelia when she was 2 months and my sister flew with my niece at 9-1/2 months.  We did about a two hour flight to/from Chicago, and neither one of us got extra seats for the girls.  Amelia slept the whole time both ways, and my neice slept a good portion of both trips.  To save myself the hassle, I got a car seat with my rental car.  I was a little apprehensive about what we'd be getting, but it was a Graco that looked barely used.  (My sister borrowed a seat from family for the trip.) I know for sure you can gate check a stroller without being charged and I think you can do the same with a car seat.  I'd check out your airlines website - we were able to find out everything we wanted to know with a little digging around on American Airlines website.

  • Thanks for the info.  We are flying on Allegiant (which I am not a fan of and their site isn't the greatest) but I'll check to see what I can find out.  We are going to visit family and won't be getting a rental car and nobody has a seat we can borrow.

Edit: I did find that we can gate check the stroller and infant seat.

  • We didn't buy Nate his own seat. We didn't take a stroller - I carried him in the Baby Bjorn through the airports. And my friend we were visiting found a carseat to borrow (and a pack n play), so we didn't have to take that with us either. On almost every flight, I noticed other parents gate checking carseats and strollers. While it would have been nice to put Nate in his carseat to sleep during the flights (especially the 8 and 10 hour ones), it wasn't worth paying the extra money for a seat.

  • We have flown with Brock 5 or 6 times now and have never gotten him his own seat. You can check your stroller and car seat at the gate for free. I don't think it's worth the money....
