B-day gift for 13 y.o. boy?

My cousin is turning 13 on Friday and my parents are hosting a little family gathering at their house (my cousin doesn't want an official party.)  I have NO idea what 13 year old boys like these days.  My mom ordered him two sets of Legos but I'm feeling like he is getting too old for them?  I want to get him something "cool".  He has one of the gaming systems but I don't know which one.  We could always do money I suppose...  Hmm.  He's not really into fashion.

Ugh.  I have no idea.

(Related....how is my little cousin 13 already???  I remember when he was born!!!)

eta:  Update:  My mom just e-mailed that Gus requested aforementioned Legos so that answers that.  :-)

I think we decided to get him a cool wallet with some cash in it.

Re: B-day gift for 13 y.o. boy?

  • What about a Best Buy or Target gift card so he can pick out his own game?  What else does he like?

Creative Kidstuff has a feature on their website where you can find toys by age group.

  • You are right on the legos. They (at least Paul did) like them, but don't get used enough to make it worth spending the money.

    Here would be my suggestions:
    1. sweatshirt from Ambercrombie, Aeropostale or something on that line.
    2. if you know people will be giving him money, buy him a wallet and put his first $5 or $10 or whatever you want in it for him.
    3. Paul also liked music at that point.  So an i-tunes gift card would work. Any kind of books or movies he likes?
    4. since you dont' know what gaming system, you could do a gift card to Target so he could go get one.
    5. a coin counting bank would be neat, lots of them out there after the holidays.
    6. a magic trick set.  Chriss Angel has a neat one out that my son still wants!  lol
  • favorite sports team or player?  You could do a article of clothing for that or a poster.

  • If he has an iPod or mp3 player, you could get him a Techno Hoodie from Old Navy (if they're even still available).  That what I got my nieces & nephew (ages 12-17) for Christmas & they all loved it!
  • Yeah he's probably done playing with Legos. I would say a gift card to pick out his own game or maybe even an itunes gift card. Otherwise, I know DH's nephew (he's 12) likes those little skateboard finger deck "tech decks" I think they are called.
  • 13 year olds are most likely done with Legos.  Unless he's a youngish acting 13 year old - if that makes any sense at all.  Some 13 year olds try to act older, and those 13 year olds aren't really into Legos.

iTunes gift card, favorite sports team shirt/sweatshirt, tickets to an event that he might enjoy (MN Swarm Lacrosse, U of M basketball game, etc), a gift card for a movie theater (AMC?) with a large box of candy...

  • He IS a "young-ish" 13...but at the same time he likes to "be cool."  He was held back a year so his friends are all a year younger than him so they still might be okay with playing Legos.  Who knows!?

I wouldn't feel confident buying him clothes because every time I see him he's about 3" taller and a shoe size bigger.  I have a feeling he will be pretty tall once he's all done growing.

Maybe we should just get cash and call it good.  I always liked getting cash.  :-)
