Kiz: architect and remodeling ?
Aaron and I are looking to remodel our downstairs bathroom and guest room to make it into our master bedroom and bathroom. The flow of the space is a bit awkward right now and we need to do something to fix it. We would love to know what our best options are for the space and amount of money we are able to spend. Are there architects who specialize in remodeling or is this something we would be better off just contacting a general contractor about? Do you have a recommendation for a person or firm that would be a good place to start?

Well of course I would recommend hiring an architect.
BUT, I know that isn't always budget-friendly enough for some folks (including me!) In all honesty I am sometimes amazed what people will pay for our services. But maybe that is because I have a design eye so I can picture for myself what would need to be done. A lot of people are clueless (not that you are...you know what I mean!). :-)
I think if you have a really good idea of where you want things and what products/materials you want to use then you'd most likely be okay going with a contractor. Some do specialize in remodeling. My personal belief is that there ARE some contractors that have a fantastic design eye. Others.....not so much. When hiring an architect it's a pretty good bet that you'll be getting the utmost attention to detail and a really well thought out plan. A few contractors could give you the same thing but it's more of a gamble.
My firm does everything from small bathroom remodels all the way up to multi-million dollar new homes and everything in between. I'll e-mail you more info.

Thanks for this info. We'll have to think about what we truly want and need and look into both contractors and architects. I think if we found the *right* contractor, we'd be fine, but we really want to do this right and not have regrets with the finished product.

Hi there- I know you don't know me, a bit of a newb on this board. But I did want to mention that as you are looking into contractors, some design build groups will actually have a registered architect on-staff. Then you get the best of both worlds. There are plenty that do the smaller/medium sized remodels as well.
I do have some names of some residential architects/designers that do work on the side as well if you are interested. They may do just a sit down recommendation as a place to start for little fee. I work primary in Commericial and Government myself but have friends that are pretty talented with residential.
