I'm thinking of raising a few. We had them when I was little and it was so exciting hatching them. I want fresh eggs and a green way to manage the ticks. Anyone done this or have any hints or resources? Random I know. I'll be the weird chicken lady.

Re: chickens....
Have you contacted MOFGA (Maine Organic Farmers and Gardeners Association)? They are the ones that put on the Common Ground Fair every year. I know at the fair they have all kinds of workshops. I believe they also have workshops and events throughout the year. They may have something about raising chickens...or at least may know who you can contact to learn more.

I saw a book about backyard chickens at Lowe's the other day. It's become quite mainstream, apparently.
No chickens for me; not allowed under our covenants. Not that I really wanted live chickens anyway. I prefer to buy them in plastic wrap at the grocery store.
We happen to have a livestock and poultry expert on staff.
