Do you Skype?

My ILs are all about the Skyping. I get that it's a great way to stay in contact with people who don't live near, but there's something weird to me about being Skyped by someone who lives 20 minutes away. I know my BIL in BC is totally into it and is on all the time with people, it just seems sort of intrusive to me. I dunno, maybe I'm being silly. Do you guys use it much?

Re: Do you Skype?

  • I used it when DH was working out of country for a few months at a time, and I use it with a good friend who lives in New Zealand, and another in England.  I don't use it for local people, however.
  • I skype regularly with my cousin in the middle east because it's free and easy plus with the video component we actually get to see each other (when we do video, lots of times because of time change I have just woken up so I don't put video on). I sometimes use it with my brother in Alaska but I have never skyped with someone who lives close to me. It's never even occurred to me.I just use the phone.

What are you finding intrusive about it? Is it the video?  If so just don't turn the video on.

  • The video, for sure. Which, until reading your post I didn't know I could actually turn off! lol Duh! I suppose I don't know enough about it but the idea that someone is sitting on their computer and is notified that I signed on or whatever, it's very creepy to me. The whole thing, weirds me out...can't quite put my finger on it. Then again, I think that the Xbox Kinnect is super creepy too! Tongue Tied
  • I find the video part of it creepy. I skype with my uncle who lives in the turks and caicos and thats about it.

I also find it creepy that when my old room mates played video games they can go online and talk to people all over the world.

    I am weird like that.

I usually have the video off and use it just like the phone. I also always have it on away so that I can see when other people come on but they don't see what I'm doing and we can talk when I actually have time and feel like it.

  • Since moving we have used it everyday to talk to one person or another.  DH talks to his parents like 8 times a day so he uses skype and kills time with his dad at work for a bit.  Saves us lots of money each month on our phone bill.  Probably once a week to talk to my aunt, 3-4 times a week to talk to my mom and 6-7 times a week to talk to my IL's.  Austin gets up on the camera and 'talks' to them, we have a detachable web cam so we follow Austin around with it for them to see him.  Makes them feel like they still get to be part of our lives everyday.

  • Yes and I really like it - especially since the birth of my DD. No family lives close to us (either out west, in Australia or Italy) so for some peeps like my ILs it has been the only way for them to see her 'in person.'  Most of my closest girlfriends live away as well so we've even had drinks together on it while we caught up on life.
    I've never skyped locally though.

I remember as a kid watching "The Jetsons" and Jane had a fake face she could put up in front of her if someone called her on the video phone before she was dressed/made up. Sometimes I think I need one of those!

  • We skype once a week with my parents, so they can see my kids.  Thats it, no one else.  I don't want people seeing in my house, its too messy.

  • I've used it and still do for certain things.

My FI's brother and SIL and their baby live in the Caymans so we skype with them to see his nephew all the time. I used it to call my friend when she was in europe and India.

Now I use it to skype into a pole class if I'm sick and don't want to infect anyone, or to do a pole jam with people. Sometimes they are local, or they are anywhere in the world.

My FI and I used it to call each other when he was in Fort Mac since the reception on his cell was crappy up there.

  • We've used it to talk to SIL & BIL in Italy, and I'm sure we'll be using it a lot more now being in Halifax with no family or other friends around and they'll be able to see our LO once he/she is born as well.
