Nurses..or anyone with Flu shot experience..Help!

OMG!  I am going to stangle my H.  He took P for his two year well visit this morning.  The doctor asked if he has his flu shot and H said no!  Well..he did have his flu shot about 2 months ago, which was on his record since he had it at the office.  Apparently, no one checked that.  I called the nurse in a panic but I had to leave a message.  She still hasn't called me and I freaking out.  Google isn't helping me.  Anyone know the consequences of this or have any advice???

  • Try not to panic, he'll be ok!  The shot is just the inactivated virus and most likely some preservatives that are common in many shots.  Assuming he doesn't have known allergies to eggs or anything (which I'd assume he doesn't since he had already received one) he should be ok. DS received 4 shots last Wednesday (presumably all containing additives) and he's fine.

I would, however, let the doctor know that I was quite angry that they failed to rely on the chart.  This really should have been avoidable!

This exactly! He'll be fine, but I would definitely chew their a$$es about about not checking the chart first!

  • Well H called the CDC and they told him there wasn't any real risk.  The nurse at the office called me back and told me he had not had the flu shot this year.  I told her he did and I know the specific date.  He was not with our normal doctor that day, maybe they forgot to put it on his record.  The nurse said she would call me back again, it looks like someone might be in trouble.

It really does amaze me how when things are going on with our kids it is hard to remain calm.  I am not a person to freak out about much, but this scared the heck out of me.

  • Are you sure they didn't give him a booster?  DD is going back tomorrow for a flu shot booster - she had the regular flu shot ... in late November, I think.  Maybe it was December.  Anyways, something to think about.

Good thought Nicole.  I am almost 100% sure that he had the regular shot.  I believe once they are over 1 year it is the regular shot.  The CDC reassured my husband that he would be fine.  We are just waiting on the final word for our Pedi.

  • DD is 17+ months.  ::shrug::  I just do what they tell me. ;)  In this case, it means she goes back for a flu booster shot tomorrow.

  • Like the CDC said - he'll be fine, but I would be angry with the office for not knowing that he'd already received the shot.

As far as kids receiving 1 vs. 2 shots - if it's the first time that the child has been vaccinated against the flu, they should receive 2 shots, approximately 30 days apart.
