Hiiii everyone. Sorry to have been completely MIA for the past week, but I hope everyone had a relaxing, fun & safe Holiday and New Year!
I wanted some opinions on what we should do about joining a gym. I've been wanting to join one since J & I moved and now, at possibly the worst time since 99% of the population is doing the same, I really want to get on it especially since it is more difficult to workout sans gym in the wintertime (+ I would like the both of us to get back in shape together).
While living at home I belonged to Planet Fitness and while I was a fan for a while, it wore off - it became overcrowded, full of people who were more concerned about how they looked & socializing than working out, smelly and just more of a pain in the @$$ than anything. I also didn't like that it had no classes to offer. The pro was that it was cheap ($10-$20/month depending on the membership type).
The closest PF to J & I is now about 10 miles away, and it takes at least 20 minutes to get to. The high point is the price, although I'm sure the experience will be the same as the other PF I previously belonged to.
They just built a YMCA literally a mile down the road from us, and we can be there in 2 minutes. Major plus. It has 5 pools, classes (some do cost extra, but not much), an indoor track, strength equipment, cardio equipment, the whole nine yards. Con? The cost. It's $85/month for the both of us under their family plan (includes us two plus up to 3 children - which makes sense since an individual plan is $58/month).
Does anyone belong to the Y and if so, is it worth the cost? Do you like it? Hate it? Should we just suck up the drive & join back at PF? We think we may be able to swing the Y membership cost and it's nice to know we aren't locked in to a contract once we join, but I'm just curious as to whether it's worth the price.

Re: It's fun to stay at the...
I don't belong to the Y, so I can't comment on whether I love it or not.
But...the first thing I would ask myself is how committed I am to going to the gym. You're gung ho now, but what about when it gets warmer outside? Will you want to do outdoor activities or still go to the gym?
What is the penalty if you end your membership before the year term because you're not going as much? A lot of gyms will still charge you the full year amount - not sure if the Y does or not.
IMO, $85/mo is a lot of money if you're not 100% committed and think you may fall off the bandwagon eventually.
i dont have a Y by me. I live in a very rural area though, and all of the gyms are far away and a lot of money. I pay $100/pp a month plus extra for classes, a $300 a year fee, etc. HOWEVER, because I pay so much, i find it more of a reason to drag my a$$ there almost every day. the biggest cons: the distance from home (it is next door to my office, but on weekends that means i have to drive 30 minutes to get there), and the additional costs of classes/trainers. i am looking at another gym that is on my way home so its not out of my way and is only 10 minutes away from our house (good for weekends). plus the trainers are only $30-$50 a session, not an additional $100. However, monthly memberships are still $70/pp. and I still have to check the cancellation policy at my current gym.
moral of the story: i think the more expensive gym that is closer is better. its closer. 85/per couple is pretty good. i have heard great things about the Y. but i would check with them to see if you have to pay a fee to cancel as the months get warmer if you want to work out outside rather than at the gym.
good luck!

The only problem with the Y is that it can run a wide gamut - where I originally lived, it was dark, dingy, had limited class options, older equipment. Just kind of blech. When I bought my house, I changed to another YMCA - new, modern equipment, everything was pretty well maintained. And it was a couple bucks cheaper per month. But, it was also a bit more crowded because it was newer & the staff kept up with things.
Moral of the story - be sure to tour the Y before you sign up - it will help you decide if it's worth it - and make sure you check it out at a time you'd typically be going - Monday's after work I've noticed pretty much EVERY workout space I've ever used (both Y's and LA Fitness) are jam-packed...but it's practically empty on Friday evenings.
IUI #1 10/12/11 (Bravelle + HCG + Prometrium & acupuncture) = 10/26 BFP! Beta #1=250, Beta #2= 615. 1st u/s 11/8.
I used to belong to the Y and loved it. I need classes to stay on track. I only stopped my membership because it was right near my house in Northeast Philly and I got a job downtown. I am not the person who commutes via train and goes to the gym before or after work - it just doesn't happen.
Now I go to a gym at 18th & Market because they have classes tailored to the working peeps (30 or 45 minutes) and most of them are at lunch time.
