When I lived in a condo, we had to have our dryer vents professionally cleaned every 2 years.
I now own a SFH. Is it still recommended to hire out for dryer vent cleaning? I don't remember this ever being done when I was growing up, and I don't know anyone who does this.
Is it important for fire safety? Is it a waste of money?

Re: Dryer vents?
It is important that they be cleared periodically for fire safety, but I wouldn't waste the money hiring someone to do it. You can snake something through the line to clear the lint, but here's a quick, easy way to clean out the line instead. It's going to sound weird, but it'll be way less painstaking than any other method.
Get a big trash bag, something strong, like a lawn bag. Take off the vent hood outside and tape the bag snugly around the opening. Now get yourself a leaf blower (just borrow one if you don't have one) and stick it in the vent line behind the dryer. You'll blow all that lint out in just a couple minutes - Ta-da!
Also, make sure you clear out any lint in the dryer and in the short vent from the dryer to wall.
ETA: Forgot to mention you'll need to poke some holes in the bag for air to escape, but small enough for the lint to not fly all over your lawn. Acutally lent is compostable, so you could just not do a bag and let it fly all over to decompose naturally, but your neighbors may not be thrilled
