We're going to be in the market for a new car within the next month or so. Right now, I'm driving an Expedition. As much as I love it, the gas is getting outrageous. My commute to work is about 30 miles one way. So, it's just not practical for me to drive this huge SUV everyday. DH is going to get the Expedition and we'll be looking for a car for me.
DH also wants to sell his antique car and get a Dodge Viper. I told him that he can do that so long as I get the final say in what kind of car we buy. So ...
What kind of car do you drive?
Would you recommend it? Why?
And, just for fun, what's your dream car?

Re: Let's talk cars :)
Right now I drive an 03 Honda Accord. I love it because it is paid for! My commute is the same distance as yours, and my car works pretty well for me since my car gets good mileage and is low maintenance. I can get *almost* a week's worth of driving in before filling up if I'm not making a lot of extraneous trips. It's not the most glamorous vehicle, but it's dependable, safe, all that good stuff. If I was to buy another vehicle in a similar make/model I would probably look at a Nissan because they're a bit cheaper and seem to be comparable in safety, gas mileage, and stylishness.
However, my next car will probably be a crossover. I really love the Volvo ones (XC90), but we're also looking at other makes that are a bit cheaper.
What kind of car do you drive? 2008 Ford Escape XLT w/ 4WD, 3.0 L V6.
Would you recommend it? Why? Yes, I love my car. It's a girly SUV, but still manly enough for H to not be embarrassed when he drives it. I also feel safe in it; if I crash, I don't feel like I'll die (like I did with my Focus). I bought it because it had 4WD and my Focus was sliding all over the roads. It goes through snow like I'm driving on dry pavement. I love it! Probably not good for someone with a long commute as it only gets 19 MPG.
H has a 2002 Toyota Camry that he drives daily as he has a much longer commute. It gets about 28 MPG.
And, just for fun, what's your dream car? Brand new Corvette in Electric Blue. I'd settle for a Camaro, though.
What kind of car do you drive? Acura RSX
Would you recommend it? Why? I love it! It's small, so it's easier to drive in the city, easier to parallel park (I am not the best at parking, so this is actually a big deal), the mileage is good, it drives well, it has a tiptronic transmission, so it can be automatic or manual (but without the problems of a clutch). I also like that even though it's small, the back seat is reasonable for adults and it's a hatchback, so you can carry furniture, skis, or a bike. And I've had a good experience with customer service. Based on my experience with this car I would also recommend a Honda.
And, just for fun, what's your dream car? Well, actually I wanted an RSX since high school, so I guess this is my dream car LOL!
What kind of car do you drive? 2011 Honda Pilot
Would you recommend it? Why? Yes - but not for long commutes. I love driving an SUV, I feel so safe, and have tons of space, but it takes me a little over $50 bucks to fill up the tank, no big deal since I work from home but with a long commute I could see it being an issue.
And, just for fun, what's your dream car? I'm gonna have to go with a Range Rover

I drive an 06 Honda Civic EX. I love it. I'd definitely recommend it. The gas mileage is phenomenal and its bigger than the Corrola.
My dream at this point would be the VOlvo XC60, but that's not going to happen in our rushed timeframe (my dad's gf wants to buy my car and give hers to my little sister.. great car swap of 2011 and dad is pushing for the next few month. YIKES). I'll probably end up with a Subaru Forester, and that suits me just fine.
What kind of car do you drive? 09 Hyundai Santa Fe. Bought it because I was in a bad wreck and totaled my Toyota Highlander and it was what I could afford.
Would you recommend it? Why? I do like it and would recommend it. The gas mileage is ok as far as SUVs go (I used to drive 38 miles one way to work so I feel your pain). It's safe and aside from one freak glitch it hasn't given me any trouble. We need the room of an SUV which is why I have it. Lot's of storage and room for our needs.
And, just for fun, what's your dream car? Probably an Expedition or a Tahoe (if gas weren't an issue!)
I've got a 2008 Ford Fusion, which I am loving. I get about 26mpg consistantly in the city (35mph or less.) When I drive home on the freeway to WI, I get about 30-32mpg. I think the new hybrids get significantly better gas mileage though.
The car has tons of space, both up front and in the back seats, and it's not too low to the ground so it's easy to get in and out of it. The truck has more than enough room, too. The best, part, though is that the car drives like a little car, if that makes sense. I test drove at least 20 cars before I purchased my Fusion.
Everyone who's ridden in the car comments on how smooth it is, as well. It drives really easily, too. Plus it looks like a more expensive car, I think.

Linds, I wish my SUV was only $50 to fill up! I had to fill up on my way to work this morning and it was $75 to fill even with the quarter tank that I already had in there.
Thanks for the help, ladies! I've added a few of the cars above to my list of what to check out. I'm going to stop at the dealer tonight while DH is in class and look around at a few.
What kind of car do you drive? 2005 Ford Escape Limited 4WD
Would you recommend it? Why? I love it. It's WONDERFUL in the snow. DH does snow removal in the winter and last year we got 3' overnight basically. Without the roads being plowed at all, he made it to work. It gets decent MPG and only costs about $40 to fill the tank up. It has 81,000 miles on it right now though and things are starting to break, but that'll happen with any car. It should last me another 100k miles. In the summer it also does a great job and the features are really nice (sunroof, fold flat backseats, leather interior, heated seats for winter, defrost on the outside mirrors, etc.)
And, just for fun, what's your dream car? 1967 Shelby Ford Mustang.. One day!
Thanks so much for posting this! I really need a new car (mine's AC AND windows don't roll down - no way I'm going through another DC summer).
I can say my dream car is a Mazerati.....but probably won't have in this lifetime, haha
What car do you drive? I have a '07 Audi Convertible. I got it during the time that I was working and going to school full-time. I was turning 35, and I was going through some kind of mid-life crisis, lol. My current daily commute is 17 miles one way and $30week usually works out for gas.
What's your dream car? Land Rover would be nice, but it will never happen. Once we start a family, I will likely get some kind of a SUV; but for now, I plan to keep my car for as long as I could, since I'm still paying for it.
