Cars...

DH and I are in the market for a new car, yay!  I hate car shopping more than anything.

Anyways, we definately want an SUV because the Montana winters are horrid, and you pretty much have to have an SUV here lol.

I have driven my sister Honda CRV and loved it, so I'm leaning towards that.  Anyone else have any recommendations for us?

 TIA!

Re: Cars...

  • We have a Toyota FJ Cruiser and absolutely love it! I love that it's unique plus it can drive anywhere! This thing is a machine in the snow and it gets pretty good gas mileage for an SUV. It does not have all of the bells and whistles but that makes it more affordable. It also drives very well. Have fun picking out a car!

  • Not an SUV, but I super puffy heart Subarus. They are amazing winter cars.

Ditto. If we ever move to Colorado I told H that I'm getting a Subaru. I love them. Other then that I love Jeep's also. We have a Wrangler and my only complaint is that it's not plush at all considering how expensive the dang thing is. But it's a work horse and it will never fail you. We have a 4 door and it's super roomy.

  • I third the Subaru!  The Outback is four-wheel drive but still gets great gas mileage for a snow-safe vehicle.  We rented one a few winters ago and it was great.

Also check out the Mazda3.  It's another snow-safeish car.  My brother has one with snow tires and I drove it last month and saw a bunch of cars slipping a sliding around this one corner so I braced myself for a bit of a slip but his car pulled it off without a problem!  I was very impressed!

Otherwise the Honda CRV is a great option.  I'd get one of the older models with the table in the back, personally.  Honda did not to itself a service removing that option from the newer models!  It's the most ridiculous but handiest thing ever!

  • We have a Subie.  Ok, so we're nerds and that's what we call our WRX.  It is great in the snow.  Even last year when we had a ton.  And it's super fast and fun.  I was pissed at DH for buying it but I secretly love it now.

As for SUVs.  I really like the Mazada 7 & 9 and Honda Pilot.

  • We have a Ford Escape and LOVE it! It is AWD and handles very well in snow. We get really good gas mileages with it, better then my car does! GL car shopping and let us know what you end up with :-)

  • Ford Escapes are really good cars (even though I hate Fords in general lol).  I really like Nissan Muranos although I'm not sure how they would handle in the snow, we really don't get that down here.  The Chevy Equinox's are nice too, but again, not sure about the snow.  I'm sure you know this, but the most important thing is a good set of winter appropriate tires (speaking from someone who lived for 19 years in Wisconsin).
  • I have the Honda CRV and my sister has the Ford Escape and both handle very well in the snow and get pretty good gas mileage.
  • I have a Toyota Rav4 Sport (6 cyl, 4X4 and no wheel on theback) my car is AWESOME in the snow, handles the back country roads really well and the highway too, and I've got a ton of room.

Only downfall is the small gas tank.  I get great mileage though.

  • I have a 4wd Jeep Compass and I absolutely love it. It handles really well in the snow with the 4wd on and gets pretty decent gas mileage (about 25 mpg). I like that it's not giant (though neither are CRVs or Rav4s) but has enough room for plenty of stuff.

Both of my parents have subarus in upstate NY.  Great alternative to an SUV and they can be even better in the snow/ice on hills (lower center of gravity)
