Big D and I are planning a road trip this summer and we're going to spend 2 nights in Vegas over his birthday. I've never been to Vegas, so I have no idea which hotels are good. Good restaurants are a must! TIA
Re: Vegas hotels
my read shelf:
I've stayed at Luxor, Monte Carlo, Flamingo, Rio and The Venetian...Can you tell where my husband's happy place is?
I would not choose to stay at the Monte Carlo again, but it wasn't the worst place in the world. Clean rooms, but the customer service was definitely lacking.
The Venetian was beautiful, but a little on the spendy side.
I LOVED the Rio---the bed was SO amazingly comfortable. The downside to this hotel is that it's off the strip. We had to take the bus or taxi anywhere we wanted to go.
The Flamingo was centrally and very easy to walk to most of the places on the Strip. The rooms were clean and decent priced. They have a great adults only pool, it was nice to get away from all the families for a bit.
I've also heard great things about Paris from a friend that just went last summer.
As far as food, we went to dinner at Carnevino Steakhouse (in the Venetian/Pallazo) last time we were out there, and it was the best steak I've ever had. Mmmm...my mouth is melting jsut thinking about it! I believe we spent about $250 for our meal for two (including a $90 bottle of wine). My husband can't wait to go to Hash House A Go Go when we go for spring break this year--but I think it's breakfast foods.

Yes, the middle of the week will be cheaper for sure. And prices go down in the summer because it's not quite as busy.
This. I loved Madalay Bay! It was very nice and the spa was amazing!!
It's been 5+ years but I've stayed at the Luxor & the Flamingo.
The Luxor was fun to stay in because of the uniqueness of the building but otherwise, it didn't seem worth it to me. It's far away from many of the main hotels & attractions. We had to take a cab to get anywhere in a timely manner.
The Flamingo is in the middle of it all & very decently priced. I'd stay there again in a heartbeat. The rooms were basic & clean. I agree with the PP about the adult pool (European style bathing) being wonderful. I was there on a girls' weekend in August & we'd sit at the pool all day & go out at night to beat the heat.
There is a fun little Italian restaurant behind the Flamingo called Battista's Hole in the Wall. It's similar to Buca. The food & service was excellent. You also get all-you-can-drink wine with any dinner entree & they have an accordionist (is that a word?) walking amongst the tables.
I think it's good to be centrally located on the strip (or at least stay somewhere in between Treasure Island and MGM).
I've only stayed at Paris and Treasure Island. The location of Paris is really good because it's in the middle of everything. I like Treasure Island because it's not too big (ie you don't have to walk the equivalent of four football fields just to run up to your room).
Hotels:
Flamingo was great. It is in the middle of the strip and very reasonably priced compared to others. We had great service, the pool area was awesome plus there is a great little garden area with real flamingos and penguins- it's like a mini zoo back there.
Monte Carlo- I had no issues what so ever at the Monte Carlo. I didn't pay for my room there as it was for work, so I have no idea how much it was per night but I am guessing that it was more than the flamingo. There was a great little sit down chinese restaurant within the Monte Carlo that had really good food.
Restaurants: Because DH and I were engaged in LV, we had a special romantic dinner at the Top of the World restaurant. We had the most amazing steaks ever but it was SUPER expensive. It was fun for a special occasion, but I wouldn't go back just for dinner. http://www.topoftheworldlv.com/
We also ate at Runjungle- a brazillian type steakhouse, but as I was looking for the website, it turns out that they have closed since I was there last.
Let us know where you decide to go!
We got married in Vegas 10 months ago, ahh I miss it!! We stayed at Plant Hollywood, as well as had our reception there. I loved PH, and would stay there again in a heart beat. I agree with everyone, the service was perfect and the hotel as a whole was very clean. I'd look into PH for sure.
I have also stayed in Paris, and the room was very comparable to PH. You could tell that PH is just a newer hotel with the upgrades in the rooms.
Middle of the strip is the best place to be.
Food:
We took our wedding party to CraftSteak (http://www.mgmgrand.com/restaurants/craftsteak-steak-house.aspx) He might love this place if he is a big Top Cheft fan, as it is owned by Tom Colicchio. Super spendy but OMG AHHHmazing!
In Plant Hollywood's "miracle mile" there is a sandwich place that makes my mouth water every single second I think of it. http://www.earlofsandwichusa.com/contact/jobs/nv/planet-hollywood-resort-casino/ It has great quality sandwiches for less then $10 each. (they are big too)
This a a fun site to check out, for free activites to do: http://www.vegas4locals.com/free.html
Good luck, and have fun!!
Thanks for all the info - especially the not so good reviews. I think I'm getting some choices narrowed down.
BTW, what's the parking situation at these hotels? Big bucks per day?
If you stay at the Flamingo, try and get a GO room. They're still fairly newly renovated and I liked them, but the rest of the hotel looked kind of run down. The pool area was nice though and the hotel is in a really great location.
I've also stayed at the MGM and the room we had was great. But that hotel/casino is HUGE and it's at a far end of the strip (by NYNY) so you have to walk more to get to the middle of the strip.
Next time I go - I want to stay at Caesars or the Mirage.
I ate at Mon Ami Gabi at the Paris last time I was there and it was a good meal and a good price. You can try and sit on the patio and you'll have a good view of the Bellagio fountains.
I'm guessing parking is expensive, but I've never rented a car there. From what I've seen though and from what I've heard - driving is a nightmare in LV. If you're only going to be there a couple of nights and plan on hanging out on the strip most of the time, I don't think I'd bother. There are tons of cabs and a monorail to get you around the main strip areas.
