Hi ladies!!
I have also posted over on the Boston board, so sorry if you read this already
DH and I are attending a wedding of a high school friend of DHs out in Plymouth, MA. We are planning to come to town,
and are planning to fly into Logan. The wedding
is at a country club out in Plymouth Friday night, and then our thought is
that we will come in to Boston Saturday to see the sights. We will have to rent a car for the first couple
days, but our hope is that we can turn it in on Saturday once we get in
to town so we don't have to deal with it. So here are my questions for
you:
1.Will it be safe/easy to take public transit to the airport on Monday morning, possibly as early as 5am.
2.
If we drop our rental car off at 30 park plaza (looks south of the
river) will we be in the ghetto? Will it be safe to take the orange
line from there?
3. Where is the best place to stay once we are downtown--should we try
and stay near the airport (I found an embassy suites that looked nice)
or is it better to stay somewhere else?
4. Are there any other areas to avoid/stay out of?
5. If we fly in to logan as late as 4pm on a weekday will traffic be a nightmare trying to get south to Plymouth?
Re: IN Nestie with some Boston area questions
The only thing I can answer is #5... we went to visit my bro north of Boston last Wednesday, and left at 5pm... traffic was not fun right in Boston. It took us two hours to get home (should have been about an hour & 10 minutes).
I hope you have a nice stay in MA! Have fun at the wedding!
1. i'm not sure what time the T starts running, you may want to look into that as i may not start until 6ish.
3. i'd stay in boston - the marriott at copley plaza is nice if they have any deals. i'd probably choose a boutique hotel (like any of the kimpton's or the charlesmark) because i like those kind of hotels more.
4. all the touristy areas of boston are safe and easily accessed by foot or the T
5. yes, traffic from boston to plymouth after 4pm will be a nightmare. you'll have to take the southeast expressway to route 3 (which is two lanes). i'd try to get a flight that puts you in earlier or later to avoid this entirely, especially if you are arriving on a friday - everyone and their brother will be bound for the cape (which is the same way you get to plymouth).
This! Hope you have a great time!
Hi! I went to college in Boston and loved it.
1. Yes, it should be fine. You will not need a car in Boston and the T (public transit) is safe. Be aware that the T doesn't start running until 5:30ish (if I remember correctly). You can get to the airport on the Green Line, transfer to the Blue Line at Government Center, and then take the MBTA shuttle bus to your terminal. Or take the Red Line to South Station and transfer to the Silver Line (bus).
2. Yes, that area is fine. The area close to the Green Line/Public Garden/Boston Common is safe. I have walked alone all throughout Boston (from the North End, Government Center, and Downtown Crossing to Fenway/Kenmore) and always felt safe. I'd take the Green Line over the Orange Line, though. That's partly because I know the Green Line better. I've never been on that part of the Orange Line.
3. Don't know, as I never stayed in a hotel and have friends in the area. There are a lot of hotels in the downtown area, and they are within walking distance of things to do.
4. I would be cautious about South Boston, Jamaica Plain, and the area a few blocks south of Back Bay/Copley Plaza (perfectly fine in daylight but be cautious late in the evening). But you probably wouldn't be going to these areas anyway.
5. Probably, but I don't have much experience with Boston traffic.
Good luck!
Running on the Rhode
I hate you very much
1.Will it be safe/easy to take public transit to the airport on Monday morning, possibly as early as 5am. Yes and No. Public Transit is called the T. It is safe and easy but does not start until 6 am. www.mbta.com is the website for the Boston T and provides start times per station. There is train service out to the suburbs but I am not sure if it gets all the way to Plymouth.
2. If we drop our rental car off at 30 park plaza (looks south of the river) will we be in the ghetto? Will it be safe to take the orange line from there? The orange line goes through both nice neighborhoods and tough neighborhoods. It depends on location.
3. Where is the best place to stay once we are downtown--should we try and stay near the airport (I found an embassy suites that looked nice) or is it better to stay somewhere else? Boston is only 3 miles square. It is surrounded by 8 other cities. You want proximity to the T and your desired locations. For the North End, check out the Millenium or the Onyx. For Back Bay, check out the Westin or Copley Plaza. Hotels at a variety of price points are scattered all over Boston.
4. Are there any other areas to avoid/stay out of? Don't wear Yankees memorabilia near Fenway. The fans are rabid. Stupidity on the roadways is rampant. Bad things can happen in any neighborhood if you don't pay attention to where you are. Stay to well lighted areas. I spent 20 years as a single woman working all over Boston and have not had any incidents.
5. If we fly in to Logan as late as 4pm on a weekday will traffic be a nightmare trying to get south to Plymouth? Yes. Rush hour is 3 to 7 pm and 5:30 to 9:30 am. Think Chicago traffic with a bad attitude. There are seasonal swings in traffic due to all the colleges in Boston. In the Summer, Route 3 towards the Cape is particularly bad. I suggest that you have a leisurely dinner near the airport then head south to the hotel. The Boston Globe (local paper) recently ranked a lot of restaurants in its best of Boston review. www.boston.com It should have some good ideas. Logan airport is considered East Boston. If you are using a GPS, get the maps updated before you come visit. Many Boston area highways have been updated in the last few years.
The good news is that Boston has world class dining, architecture, historical sites and a fantastic T and bus system. It is really worth visiting. We have great museums, theatre and music. Welcome to my hometown.
Thank you SO much for the great info! Especially the tip about staying in town to avoid the rush and then driving south.
We are still figuring out our flights and depending what we chose we may get in as early as 2, or as late as 4. Obviously if we can get in by 2 (and all goes according to plan) we will try to get south of town earlier.
This will be in the summer, and we have been warned that the cape traffic will be a nightmare.
Thanks again for the help!
