Cruise!!

Next week I will be on my first cruise and I am so excited!  Have any of you cruised before?  Any advice as far as checking in, boarding, what to bring, etc?  We are going to Belize and Roatan which I am thrilled about - I am just worried about what the weather will be like until we get to those places.

Also, I noticed that the ship expects us to be pretty dressy for dinner each night, has that been your experience?  I got so freaked out I bought DH a new suit (I don't like any of his anyway) and at this point I have packed nine, yes NINE cocktail dresses.  Too much, maybe?

Re: Cruise!!

  • What cruise line/ship are going to be on? That will make a difference in how dressy they expect you.. tell me, and I can tell you their general dress code. :)

Have a GREAT time. My only suggestion is that if you want to book any excursions through the cruise line, do that as soon as possible after you board the ship to ensure a spot since sometimes they can fill up fast. Ditto on spa appointments--get it booked ASAP! I know some lines are doing it where you can book excursions and spa treatments online before you even go on your cruise, so you might check that out.

Also, be mindful of your bill. Drinks add up FAST. DH and I were on a 3-night cruise as part of our honeymoon, and we hardly drink... yet between the few we did have plus souvenirs, a massage, etc... end of our trip we had $800 in charges. Indifferent

  • We are going on a RC cruise.

We have booked excursions - ziplining in Belize and some sort of random private beach thing in Cozumel.  I doubt I will do any spa treatments - I am spendy but not THAT spendy (especially since I can get a really great massage in Norman for $30).

I keep reading on the travel boards to pack, then take out half of your clothes. Yikes.  I don't feel like we have packed that much other than my nine cocktail dresses - regardless, we can fit everything into one carry on if we leave his suit and my dresses hanging.

  • Also, what did you pack for sea sickness?

Also, what did you pack for sea sickness?

I have horrible motion sickness.  We went on a cruise when I was 20 weeks pregnant and couldn't take any of the over-the-counter stuff.  My doc prescribed me the phenergan gel and it was WONDERFUL!  They say it may make you drowsy, but most any meds knock me out and I did not notice being sleepy while on it.  When I'm not pregnant, I normally take non-drowsy dramamine for motion sickness, but I've never tried it on a cruise before.

When we went on our cruise we knew absolutely nothing, so H's mom (who is an avid cruiser) called up her doctor and told him we were going on a cruise and he prescribed us some small patches that we stuck behind our ears. We used them and neither of us got sea sick... but we didn't get a chance to find out if we did without them, or not. I don't know what they're called, but you might check with your doctor...?

No advice from me, as I've never been on a cruise. I hope you have fun.

I want to know where you go for $30 massage in Norman...

Me too!! I think I'm in need of a good massage.

Have fun on your cruise! I don't have any advice either since I've never been on a cruise.

  • RC is a pretty casual cruise line since it caters to everyone from couples to families. So honestly, DH might be slightly overdressed in a suit--I think most men on the ship will be wearing like khakis and a collared shirt to dinner, and some might go with a button down and possibly a tie. Women will wear anything from resort wear to prom dresses... and some people will come in shorts and flip flops because they're lame like that.

I've never taken anything for sea sickness because I've never had a problem. Honestly, the rocking of the boat is pretty gentle for the most part because the Caribbean isn't too wild, and the ships these days have amazing stabilizers. The rocking puts me right to sleep! A lot of people take dramamine though with good results, or some little bracelet things on your wrists. I don't remember what they're called. But you might be just fine, and worst case scenario the ship's on-board doctor will have PLENTY of stuff for sea sickness. It's a common ailment. :)

Have so much fun!!! DH and I went zip lining in St. Lucia back in September, and it was amazing! We had a blast doing it!

Pack some seabands. They are the most attractive thing but they do help if you are feeling alittle queasy. I used them during my pregnancy. I think you can find them at Walmart, Target, or CVS.

The cruises I've been on with RC, they won't let people come into dinner with shorts and flip flops. I don't think your H will be overdressed in a suit. They usually have one night on the cruise that is formal night at dinner where every man wears a suit and women all wear nice gowns.

I agree with pp to keep track of your spending. You can usually do that on your tv in your room. They give you a "seapass" card you use to pay for everything. You don't use cash anywhere on the ship. So, it's really easy just to swipe the card everywhere and forget how much you're spending.

Which ship are you going on? Just curious because I've been on a couple and I'm pretty sure my parents have been on every RC ship. We love cruising, you'll have a blast!

they are Sea Bands Smile  I get motion sickness in the car and such and they work wonders!  I also used them at the begining of this pregnancy becuase I was so sick.  Like Ami said they are not super attractive, but they work!

Also though, I didn't get sick when we were crusing.  I couldn't feel the boat moving at all really!

I hope you guys have a blast!  It sounds like a really fun trip!

  • just wanted to say we went on a cruise this summer to both of those places and I am super jealous that you are going!  Belize was my favorite.  The water/beach is gorgeous there!

We went on Carnival and for dinner I wore a nice dress and H wore dress pants, shirt, and tie.  I think 2 nights were "formal" night and we just wore a little more fancy dress/outfits.  I'm not sure how RC dress code is, though.  I've heard it's a little different for each cruise line.
