She said what?!

My mom teaches 8th grade Spanish.  It's an elective, but you have to have it (or French) to be in the Honor's program.  She's always said the worst part about being a teacher was the parents, not the kids or paperwork or whatever, the parents.  Her school is in a fairly upper-middle class neighborhood so a lot of the parents (and kids) have a real entitled attitude about things.  She's had this one mom calling and e-mailing her since before the holidays, including the last day of classes.  She wants to move her daughter to the other Spanish teacher's class.  The school has a policy of not moving kids unless there is some major reason to do so.  A friend of this woman's daughter got moved out of my mom's class for a not-so-major reason, but that's another story.  During one of their multiple conversations my mom pointed out that this girl has gotten an 85, 88 and 90 on her report cards, so not only is she doing pretty well but she is improving!  The woman basically said that the grades are not the the point but that she didn't want her to have to work so hard.  Are you f-ing kidding me?!  She doesn't want her daughter to have to make an effort to do well in her life?!  These are the kids that are going to be running our nation in 20 years or so, and they're being brought up to look for the easy way out?!  I was, and still am, completely flabbergasted.

  • Indifferent  Wow, that is unbelievable.  It frightens me what some of these parents are creating when they're raising their children this way.  Hard work pays off and everyone should know that.

  • are you kidding me?!?! (bangs head on desk)
  • Knowing where your mom teaches, I'm not totally shocked.  However, she's in the effing HONORS program but doesn't want her to work hard?  I'd tell her she is more than welcome to find another elective to take but it won't fulfill her requirements for the honors program.  The choice is hers.

Who gets the final say?  Principal?  If so, I'm guessing that's not going to go well.  Plus, it makes me wonder what the #'s are in both your mom and the other classes for purposes of child:teacher ratio.

I have the opposite problem with parents - they're all too high to remember to help their kids to school.  I typically have 4 kids in my car by the time I get to school in the mornings....so sad!

Ovarian drilling and endo removed 1/3/12
    BFP - 3/27/12
    Beta's 11, 14, 57, 637, 2800
Sono showed no baby and teeny tiny sac. Waiting to M/C naturally.

  • That is incredibly sad and explains why our nation continues to fall in the ranks of education throughout the world.

Is this legal? Your school system isn't worried about liability if you get into an accident or something?
