Have you ever thought of yourself as being in  the "customer service business?" Our head of school said this at a mtg. yesterday and it really threw me  through a loop.

Re: teachers

  • We just got a new super. and he e-mailed us a letter saying hi and telling us the "customer is always right." Mind you our new Super. has only 3 years teaching experience in a private school (he use to own Havens Candies)...my district has 60% free reduced lunch students Don't even get me going on the education system right now...

But he has to be better than the old Super, right?

I'd take yours over ours any day of the freakin' week.

  • As a high school guidance counselor I totally see a big part of my job as customer service business- taking complaints and issues and trying to smooth them over or "put the fires out" as we say.

  • We are hoping, he will be better but he likes to put the axe on the grindstone money wise...which is scary.

  • I think the blanketed statement "the customer is always right" is a bit frightening when it comes to some of the parents I've encountered...

This does make sense to me for a dean or counselor position. I just don't think it fits for teaching or as a model for a school...

  • I have thought of teacher as daycare providers often. I also had trouble viewing the business side of the non-profit I worked for with Head Start. That's why I am in education, I am no good at business.

I am very pro parent involvement, but I don't want the show run by parents. Otherwise, abolish free public education and just home school everyone.
