polycarbonate? confused

what is the deal with polycarbonate? I read about it and it says it is made from BPA - yet the thing I am looking to buy says the containers are polycarbonate but yet BPA free? that doesn't make sense!!! thoughts? TIA!

edit - just wanted to add. that its a yogurt maker - the kind with small jars inside it. one website says the jars are polycarbonate the other site just says they are BPA free. But it's the same exact product, some model number, etc.

Re: polycarbonate? confused

  • It's my understanding that polycarbonate can be made with or without BPA.  However, in my opinion, BPA is only the current ingredient in plastic that everyone's in an uproar about.  Once that get phased out, there will be some other harmful ingredient, then another, and another.  I think it's simply a bad idea to eat food out of plastic, which is a substance that can react and melt into your food.

thanks! I agree, I really wanted a yogurt maker that has the glass jars. I got enticed by this used on on craigslist. But decided the money I was going to save buying it used wouldn't justify the cost I was going to incur to then buy replacement jars in glass, since I really didn't want the plastic ones. I am holding out for now and waiting to see if something with glass comes up used.
