I just watched this week's episode last night and am left scratching my head. What was the deal with the numbers?
And dude, what was up with the way they ended the episode? The show has always been lighthearted, so the fact they killed Marshall's dad and ended the show on such a sad note left me going WTF?
The only thing this episode had going for it was that Zoe wasn't in it.

Re: HIMYM -- Spoilers
I read somewhere that the numbers were the countdown to the bad news at the end of the episode. So, everytime you see a number, it was smaller than the previous numbers. Right before Lily told Marshall, she stepped out of a cab with the number 001 on it. I think they meant for it to build suspense. Lemme see if I can find the article.

11/11/11 = 5 years. Woah!
I was thinking about this show as I was falling asleep last night. It felt different than the show usually does, like there's a new writer or something. Felt much more sit-com-y and reaching for laughs (does that make sense?).
Yeah, dead dads are a total buzz kill. I didn't like the end to the show at all.

I didn't notice the numbers. Does that mean I'm touched in the head?
The charm of the show, to me, is that it focuses on the meandering, unstable early years of adulthood. Maybe they felt Lily and Marshall were becoming too established and needed shaking up. I think it could work if the next episode takes place a month or more after Marshall's dad dies. Like how they just glazed over his first weeks when Lily left. Watching someone sob because they're sad isn't funny, but you can find humor in difficult situations when the pain is less raw.
They're all in their mid-to-early 30s now, so the What Do I Do With My Life?/I'm Grown Up But Not Really thing isn't going to work well much longer. I still enjoy it, though. I'd enjoy it better without all of the negative nancies complaining so much.

Word.
Probably. I only noticed a few of them (the most blatantly obvious, I'm guessing). I didn't realize it was a countdown from 50.
Don't get me wrong -- I still love the show. They show two reruns on two different channels at the same time, so I flip back and forth between them. I just hate them for making me cry my own tears last night. I don't have any problem other than that (unless you count my distaste for the Zoe character).

I noticed the numbers early on but didn't catch on that it was countdown until a bit later.
When it got to 2...I had that "crap" feeling, then when I saw 1 on the cab, I said "Oh no!" and I was crying when I saw Lily before she even spoke. But it was still a punch in the gut. Thankfully I was home alone so nobody could see or hear my ugly, loud crying.
It just had to be a damn heart attack, it couldn't have been a cockamouse attack or a freak Viking lamp accident?
All I know is if I wrote for the show, I'd have Marshall saying "Yeah, well my dad is dead!" next time Barney gets all weird about not knowing his father.
