Hannah's question on our pup Jack's name got me thinking. I have had a tendency all my life to name pets along a theme. When I was little it was food (two cats Rocky Road and Gravy, a bunny named Supper, and a dog named Hershey), then it was Shakespeare. My sister named her dog Caliban because she was mangy when she got her and her puppies ended up being Romeo and Hamlet(my mom wouldn't let me name him Piglet
. BTW, don't name your pets after anything in Hamlet; Both Hamlet and later, Ophelia died tragically. Now my parents' have Desi (Desdemona) a doberman and we have Odie (short for Odysseus) and Whiskey and Jack D.I do realize this probably makes us sound like nutters and writing all that out makes me realize how many pets I have had over the years.
Anybody else have a funny story on naming their pets or following naming themes?
Re: S/O to the Share your Pets: Pet names
Princess & Kitty.
Princess I call Baby Girl most of the time, and Kitty we call Mama or Mama Cat (she is Princess's Mom).
His two cats are named Peanut and Brittle (get it?)
Peanut we call Peanut Butter or Butter.
And Brittle is just Brittle.
It's funny cause they're all about the same age, and 2 years into them (and our) living together, Kitty & Peanut are best friends, and Princess and Peanut are mortal enemies.
My cats growing up were Benedict and Arnold (parents' sense of humor); parents contemplated naming their current cat Thor, for the pounding noise he made running down the hall as a kitten, but ended up being called Avery
I had two gerbils named Frank and George (mother called fish at the supermarket that earlier in the week before I got them; don't know why it stuck but it did).
Dogs:
Rita (father's a huge Beatles fan, so after the song Lovely Rita, Meter Maid; I used to show her in obedience shows, and remember being humiliated when they'd call out "Lovely Rita, Meter Maid? You're next in. Where would I be without you?")
Fire (breeder's suggestion of name, short for part of her registered show name which included Sapphire)
Abby (I was positive we'd name the Corgi one of these names: Phoebe, Zoe, Chloe - but none of them matched her personality)
Spencer (just fit him)

TTC Since January 2011 - We have bad spermRight now we have a Samson and Delilah. They're siblings. And Nimbus, but he doesn't fit the theme. He looks like a cloud, though.
When I was a kid we had a newt named Rockne after the Notre Dame football coach Knute Rockne.

Growing up, the family cat was named Ozzy because he brought my dad a beheaded bird while we were trying to come up with a name for him.
Riley's just Riley because he looked like a Riley...the shelter thought he was a girl and named him Strawberry because of his red fur.
Miley's name when we picked her up from the shelter was Rainbow. There's a terrible story behind this...when I asked "exactly how does a pure white cat come to be named Rainbow?", the lady at the shelter told us that, when the family who surrendered her brought her in, their kids had been coloring on her fur with permanent markers, so she was rainbow colored...and the parents thought this was funny! @$$holes!! She got a skin infection from it that went into her bloodstream and almost killed her...yeah, "harmless fun", huh?
Jethro was named after Leroy Jethro Gibbs, DH's favorite character on the TV show NCIS. He has no particularly Gibbs-like qualities...he's actually somewhat of a goofball, but DiNozzo was too long and too hard to explain.
We've got Bo and Luke (the Dukes of Hazard!) to brother cats that really are little devils! I swear, it's like owning to puppies... that will never grow up.
BebeGirl - maine *** cat, the old bag of the house, lol. My parents named her after a south park character!
Stella, our pug-boston mix. Before we adopted her, her name was Bella, which is pretty, but I know 4 Bella dogs, including on of my parents dogs that I grew up with. Scot and I almost only drank Stella Artois when we first starting 'hanging-out', so it made sense to us
Ugh, I just heard one of the Duke brothers drop something down the air vent. It never ends.
The first cat I ever named was Wicket, the second? Wicket 2. I was the most original 4year old ever.
-Obie is short for Oberon. It's a German name that means bear heart. His name was Bear when I bought him ($20 at a yard sale).
-I got Hally outside Walmart right before Halloween. Who gives away black cats near Halloween?!?! All I could understand from the toothless hick woman (yeah, I know, that's super judgy) was POOPINTHEBOX! Awesome.
-The ex picked up a stray in the middle of a busy intersection right around Valentine's Day, and I wanted to call her Valentina. My dad and stepmom kept her and calls her Blacky. Good job guys.
-KC started out as Jingle Bell, because we got her a bit before Christmas. It turned to kitten cakes, which was shortened to KC.
-Selma is just Selma, no story, I just liked the name.and holy crap is it hard to nest on the phone. But Ross is in q store and I'm bored :P

We don't really have a theme but we have a lab mutt who we named BellyFlop. When we got her she was an 8 lb ball of fur that did bellyflops when she went down the stairs.
We also have Olive (our boxer). Its a play off our last name.
And then there is Zeke the cat. He's a jungle bob, an exotic bread that is supposed to be somewhat on the wild side. Not ours he's a fat lazy cat who occasionally tries to hump Olive..lol
My naming skills have grown considerably since I was a kid... my first dog was a Dalmatian and we named him Spotie, first cat was Bianco which is Italian for white and he was all white.
Now We have a black lab Lola and a cat AC Slater. The names suit them to a T my animals have such crazy personalities
All of the pets my family/I have ever owned:
Tiger - cat. Sweetest cat ever. However, she died of old age one year when we went on vacation.
Tessy - cat, she was Tiger's kitten. She was a house cat and my brother let her runaway.
Pretty Kitty - cat, we gave her back to the store after about a week of having her b/c she kept peeing on our couches.
Chocolate Covered Marshmellow (known as CCM): My himalayan dwarf bunny I got in 4th grade. He was white with brown ears and paws. He had red eyes and all my of friends thought he was creepy
Fishy - beta in college
Paris - 2nd beta in college (and yes, named after Paris Hilton, haha)
Oscar - I was still in college when Ben and I started talking about getting a dog and we knew we wanted a mail. I used to sit in one of my classes and daydream up dog name lists and then I'd call Ben later and share. Out of about 30 names, this was the only one we both agreed on.

We never really had a theme. When I was little, all of the dogs we had, had people names. Now it's a mix.
In order of appearance:
Sherman - black cocker spaniel
Sampson - 1/2 westie, 1/2 scottie
Barney - Scottish Terrier and Sampson's 1/2 brother
White Cat - a white cat with a tabby tail
Christmas 1982 by Tisha_McFluffy, on Flickr
Psycho - an orange and white tabby
You can see the crazy in his eyes. lol

KC Farnsworth - a big orange tabby
This was his Olan Mills photo session. He was PISSED! We thought it was hysterical.

Moe - multi-colored tabby
Stanely - HUGE black and white kitty who thinks he's tiny. My dad has always said that if Stanley could talk, he'd sound like Mike Tyson.
The Dude (my first cat as an adult who now lives w/ my mom and dad) - an orange and white tabby, named after The Dude in The Big Lebowski.

And now my parents also have Henry (a gray tabby) and The Beast (a gray and white tabby with depth perception issues - lol)
And Keith and I have Jaz (an Australian Cattle Dog) and Cami (the cutest kitty ever!)

I've had SO many pets! I've had more than 40, so I'll only name the best.
My cat I have now is Nermal because he is a gray tabby like Nermal from Garfield. My mother in law calls him Nimo. I always correct her, but it's pointless lol
I had a newt named Gingrich.
I had two ginea pigs named Cupcake and Muffin. Cupcake was more white, and Muffin was more brown.
I had a French poodle named Maurice.
I had ferrets named Kato and Kaelin during the OJ trials.
I had SEVERAL hamsters named Hammy. There were all hammy except for Rocky which was my brothers hamster, and Mario which is my Step Son's hamster now. All they ones I named were Hammy, and there were a few lol
Doc-Black lab that was a gift from my mom to my dad for his high school graduation, he was named after something but I don't remember what.
Katie-german shorthair, she was given to me by the people my dad worked for. They had sent her to a hunting trainer and then decided not to keep her, I guess that hunting dogs are supposed to have 2 syllable names that end in a "y" sound (Moll-y, Holl-y, Kat-ie). I did argue, I was only 6.
Sampson- Jack Russell that my dad gave my sister and I for Chirstmas, named after the movie Half Baked http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=vj6aIK_WXhU
Wally-My mom's rescue Jack Russell, he came with that name and we didn't change it.
Justice- My paint horse, he came with his name but I just called him "J"
Kota-My first dog purchased as an adult. He was a black lab and I don't know how I came up with the name but the "K/C" names stuck from then on....
Cooper-Australian Shepherd, given to me by my aunt from a little of puppies that she had. Coop-dog was the best but he was hit by a car...here is a pic:
Now to the live animals:
Keno-Black lab again, just sticking with the K names.
Cash- Couldn't come up with a "K" name so we stuck with the same sound.
Khloe-Same as above.
Holy Animals...I seem like I should be on hoarders.
