Are these glasses safe to use? (PIP)

My mom was cleaning her cupboards and brought down some old glasses that I used to love as a kid.  I think they were through Pizza Hut or something... from the 80s :-)

Such a cute blast from the past!  I'm hesitant to actually use them though.  Could they have unsafe paint?  Since the paint is on the outside, I'm most worried to wash it in the dishwasher with the other dishes.

This isn't the exact glass but looks like it...

Re: Are these glasses safe to use? (PIP)

  • I would probably use but wash by hand versus washing in the dishwasher to keep the picture from fading or wearing off.  Let me also say, I would wash the first time in the dishwasher to make sure they get really clean/sanitized but would then wash by hand.
  • I would use it, but I would not put it in the dishwasher.  I don't think they had invented paint for glass that wouldn't wash off in the dishwasher yet in the 80s.
  • The paint will not wash off in the dishwasher.  McDonald's had similar cups in the 80s as well and we always washed them in the dishwasher.  I have no idea what type of paint was used on them though.
