Young child suicide - resources?

My 13 year old cousin hung herself today. Her 10 year old brother, my godson, found her body. I'm scouring the web trying to find good resources for him and his family but everything I'm coming across is geared towards older kids or very young kids, and I've found nothing specifically talking about helping kids that age when their sibling has died like that...much less how to even begin to cope with the trauma of finding the body. Any resources that anyone can offer would be much appreciated.

Re: Young child suicide - resources?

  • I'm so sorry. That is simply awful to hear and so hard to cope with for everyone. I'm really, really sorry.

I have something at work. I will send it to you tomorrow.  We recently dealt with an 11 year old who hanged himself and they gave us a number of resources for siblings, family to cope with such a tragedy, for general resources in addition to the fact this this child had several young siblings in the home. And don't forget yourself. Talk to someone, find support for yourself to cope as well as to be a source of support for your godson.

In addition to whatever I can pull together tomorrow, your local hospital will likely have grief support groups that can be a great support. My grandfather still attends his group weekly for the past year.  The hospital often have trauma focused treatment program- this is very different from individual counseling in that it is time limited, treatment focused, based on processing the traumatic event and developing coping skills. There are bereavement groups for children as young as 3 year old, and sometimes this sort of group setting can help children cope with the stigma and fear of death, especially suicide.

Victims of Crime also generally has a number of resources for groups focused on trauma specific counseling and support groups. Your local law enforcement agency should have a contact for Victims of Crime.

  • She needs to get to a psychologist asap. Make sure it is someone who deals with this age group and PTSD.

  • I just want to say that I am so sorry for your loss. That is tragic.

  • I'm so sorry for you and their loss.

I did my internship at a grief center in San Antonio, and I volunteer at one now in New Mexico. They are a great support for kids and families.

here is a local grief center. I dont know if they offer child/care giver support groups, but I would look into it or maybe they can direct you to some.

glove slap. I don't take crap.
  • include in your searches "trauma" and "ptsd"

Also, I'm thinking the  counselors at her school and his schools can connect with the school systems "trauma team" and they should have an abundance of resources...make sure he gets these!

  • Best thing is probably face-to-face counseling and supportive family and friends.  And time.  Lots of time.

I'd find a psychologist or psychiatrist who specializes in children or teens.  The child's doctor may have a suggestion.

I am sorry for your loss.

This, definitely.  DH is a teacher, and they have all kinds of resources for things like this in the counselor's office.  And if they don't have the right thing, they know exactly where or who to go to to get it for the children.

I'm so sorry for your loss. T&P to you and the family.
