Dumbest bet ever?

http://www.kptv.com/news/26382641/detail.html

CN: An Oregon Ducks fan put an ad on craigslist to find an Auburn Tigers fan willing to marry him in Vegas before the national championship game. Whichever team loses, that person has to pay to have the marriage annulled the next day.

Why would anyone do this? He says getting married to a stranger is "part of the Vegas experience" but I really just think he's undermining the sanctity of marriage. He has reduced the vows we all took last year to a bet on a college sports game. I think it's disgusting and I really hope no one takes him up on it.

What do you think?

Re: Dumbest bet ever?

  • Thats so weird and I'm not a lawyer but can you get a marriage annulled in the law or is it just a divorce?I know the church annuls but I didn't know it the law allows for that. Also what reason do you give for getting an annulment don't you need a reason?
  • Obviously this person doesn't really believe in marriage.  I think it's ridiculous!  Now, a bet with a couple already getting married where the loser had to wear the winners colors, or their teams fight song would be played down the aisle or something like that would be cute and funny.  People get married for lots of reasons....I'm just glad my reason wasn't "to make a funny".

  • You know, I didn't even stop to think about how an annulment would work, but I sure hope this guy did!

And I think sport's teamed wedding would be really cool if the couple was interested in doing that.

I do find it interesting if you read his craigslist post (there's a link in the article) that he specifies the girl has to be "cute" and "cool". Why? He's only going to be married to her for 12-36 hours anyways? It's not like they'll be spending lots of time together.

  • i'm not sure how vegas is, but i know in the state of kansas there are a plethora of reasons in which you can get an annulment. showing up to a lawyer and stating, "this was a bet" and expecting him to convince a judge to not make you go through with the precedings of a divorce...i wouldn't take my chances.

and i completely agree - this is exactly what urks me about our society these days - that it's all so easy to just marry someone and detach the sanctity of marriage and the vow you're making from the process. respecting the sanctity of marriage and knowing that it's a vow i'm not willing to break is exactly why i didn't get married in april of this year - these people need some church in their lives.

  • I think that it is a terrible idea, and does hurt the sanctity of marriage.  And I also have to wonder what kind of job this guy has, kus if he ever wants to get hired to another job, and his employer does any sort of internet search on him this will come up.  I would consider this a mark against him for any sort of professional job because it would make me question the type of person he is.

Yes, I get that it is supposed to be funny, but I just dont think that it is.

  • This is pathetic!  This guys is just looking for his 5 minutes of fame.  I hope he doesn't receive a response.  If he does, that will show how screwed up America really is!

  • Seriously? What an idiot!  I hope he has some friends that will talk him out of this!

  • UGH that is stupid.  Sounds like Las Vegas needs to tighten up their laws about marriage and divorce.  Although....I bet they make a nice state revenue from all of that "processing"...hmmmm......

I know it's hard to believe, but his ad says he just graduated law school. I had to go back and reread when you brought this up, but he obviously wasn't paying attention in classes. I don't know what firm is going to hire him when he's treating the law with such a blase attitude. And I really hope he doesn't want to be a trial lawyer, because no judge is ever going to take him seriously if this happens.

As a relatively recent law school graduate, it doesn't surprise me that much at all that this guy is too. You wouldn't believe the kind of stupid crap people in my class did (going on the People's Court, for example!).

Also does anyone watch that show on MTV where they do all the things they want to do before they die (can't remember the name). The one guy got married in Vegas and I was like OMG WHYYYY but he is still with the girl which is kind of funny. This little scam is ridic though.

I agree with Jeni completely.  This is so stupid and completely undermines what marriage is supposed to be about.
