Vaccinations & Autism

Have you seen/heard about this?  I know this has been discussed on here before... A British doctor committed elaborate fraud in his connection of vaccines and autism:

"Dr. Andrew Wakefield misrepresented or altered the medical histories of all 12 of the patients whose cases formed the basis of the 1998 study..."

  • Yikes, I wonder what the real story is. The whole thing is so controversial Tongue Tied
  • It does not surprise me at all.  Do I believe SOMETHING is causing autism?  Yes.  Do I believe it is immunizations?  No.  I think it will be real interesting when they finally figure out what causes autism.

Agreed.  Top pediatricians and other doctors have come out time and time again saying there is absolutely no correlation.  I definitely believe them over unfounded and apparently now fraudulent rumors.

  • Even if there still remained some doubt in the medical community, which there is not, about whether or not vaccines marginally increased my child's risk of developing autism, I would still vaccinate them.  I'd rather have an autistic child than to lose one to a preventable disease.

I really think he should be charged and if convicted serve jail time for his fraud in this case.

    Good point.

  • I knew this was a load of crap! I'm glad the truth is finally out. That man should go to jail! How many people have lost their kids to preventable diseases?

  • It is really awful how much time, money, and research was spent disproving this guy. And to some people, the truth still doesn't matter. The damage has been done and it will still be in the back of so many parents' minds that vaccinations could cause autism.
  • I had heard about this when it first started coming out that he had falsified data.  It is horrible that he did that, and even more horrible that there are kids out there that got sick and even died due to their parents not vaccinating because of their fear of autism.  I agree with Kendra, I'd rather have an autistic child than to lose my child.

I do hope they figure out what is causing the epidemic of autism.  It seems so random, striking all over the board.

  • I wonder what Jenny McCarthy has to say?

Well, not really......she just made a huge deal over not vaccinating children because it causes autism so I am a teeny tiny bit interested to hear her opinion.  But I don't really value celebrities opinions when making important decisions such as vaccinating my child.

I loved reading the pregnancy book she wrote, Belly Laughs, but in the back of my mind I was thinking about her crazy anti-vaccination propaganda. But parents of children with autism are so desperate for an answer, I don't blame her for taking an idea and running with it.
