Top Baby Names 2010

I thought I'd post this for anyone looking for/at names (or for what not to name, depending on your school of thought).  I will say its a bit disconcerting that Neveah has cracked the top 100.

Re: Top Baby Names 2010

  • Meh, Neveah bugs me a lot less than names where a "y" is treated as interchangeable with all vowels in an effort to make the name "yoonique".
  • Neveah is the name of a coworker's daughter, and she calls her "Nevy". I don't love it or hate it but thought I'd point that out :P

One of the day care teachers in DS's center named her daughter Neveah.  Common names vary a lot between different cultures so I don't go "ick" over names that aren't common amongst my own racial and socioeconomic background.  The only time names bug me is when their creative spelling is illogocal and leaves one with the impression that the poor child's parents were illiterate (not that I look down on people who are illiterate, but if you're not I wouldn't think you'd want people to think you were).

  • The Y thing bugs me more too.  I don't consider Nevaeh to be a cultural thing at all, as I've witnessed it in pretty much all various backgrounds.  Its a made up name...and yes I realize that some point every name was essentially "made up", but for some reason that one just gets me.  Its a word spelled backwards that some rock star guy named his kid several years ago.
  • I've seen some pretty funky spellings of Jennifer. I just don't get it!

The names we are considering aren't even in the top 80, so I'm excited! I know what it's like going through life with a really common name. I like my name, but sometimes it's annoying to have to differentiate between Jen A, B, C, D, E, etc. There was one night at work when we had 6 Jen's working. Ack!

  • I have a friend who is a l&d nurse. They had a mother who wanted to name their daughter diarreah (i prob spelled wrong) She was pronouncing it very differently than she wanted it spelled. They were encoraging a spelling that matched the pronounciation. The mother got mad. I can't imagine the teasing that kid will get.

  • I think it bugs me most when a commonly known name is spelled some ridiculous way. That's not coming up with an unusual name, that's just creating a burden for your child.

Navaeh irks me a bit. What I always found amusing is that the people I've known who went with that name seemed surprised that other people knew that it spelled "Heaven" backwards, as it were some big secret that no one else in the world but them was aware of.

JEN- I've can't wait to hear what name you come up with! You're not willing to share contenders, are you?

  • You know what I just realized today- I am an illiterate hypocrite.  "Neveah" isn't heaven spelled backward, "Nevaeh" is.  Go me!

    Eva

Kate (H loves this name, but I just don't feel it's her name, kwim?)

    Zoe

  • I feel bad for our poor little Emma. Not that my parents were any more creative. And I know Jen can relate :)

I realized that too, while reading this post, oops. Although I'll admit I didn't even know it was "heaven" spelled backwards until now! Never thought about it.

I absolutely love the name Emma! But because my name is Jennifer, I am steering away from it. :) Our last name is kinda blah, plus it would sound weird with Emma too, I think!
