S/O NT scan - anatomy scan

Okay so I scheduled my scan, and they got me in for next week. It will include an anatomy scan???? Hmm

Ummm is that even possible? I haven't really looked it up because they will reschedule if they can't tell and my friend who is a PA at an OBGYN told me I can come in for a u/s whenever I want but just wondering if anyone here actually found out that early.

*Mar* I feel like you did find out early but can't remember when.

ETA: duh, I will be 12 weeks and 3 days at the time of the scan

Re: S/O NT scan - anatomy scan

  • That is REALLY early, most anatomy scans are around 19 or 20 weeks.  I've heard that with boys sometimes it's possible by 12 weeks to tell, but most u/s techs won't make a guess that early.
  • Yeah, I think I've heard the earliest is like 16 weeks or something.

  • i could be wrong here but doesn't an anatomy scan mean the entire anatomy and not a gender prediction?

    Exactly!!

I think the girl maybe said anatomy scan by mistake, I bet they schedule me for that when I am there or something. I still haven't looked it up either. Stick out tongue

In my post below regarding Mar's crappy day, I mentioned my BFF who got the 3-D ultrasound....She went in at 13 weeks and determined it was for sure a boy.  At the 3-D place, if they couldn't determine the sex of the baby at that moment, they would have let her come back for free in a couple of weeks.

It might be early for regular ultrasound equipment to catch it but the 3-D could.

....but then again, I'm not really qualified to be giving advice on baby questions/issues :)

  • I've had a lot of fancy scans b/c they've had to keep checking my cervical length (I had a LEEP like 10 years ago).  Some scans have been 2 seconds, all they do is check the cervix, but others have included a 'growth' or 'anatomy' component and have been longer (10-15 min).  They basically look the baby over...  they find the placenta, heart, stomach, limbs, etc.  This might be what they're referring to?

These have been completely separate from the Level II u/s I had at 18 weeks.  This is the 'anatomy scan' people refer to that takes a while and they measure everything about the baby.

FWIW, we didn't do an NT scan, but I started having the cervical and growth scans at 16 weeks.  It was at my first of these scans that they first guessed she was a girl.

  • My NT scan was at 12.5 weeks. The anatomy scan was today. We did an elective ultrasound at 17wks to determine the sex.

I would assume she meant the NT scan but just said the wrong thing.. but I'm also the sort of person who would call back to find out, and double check what they meant.

    My overly happy baby girl!

  • i know of some ladies who have had the dr. guess at the sex during the NT scan, but 12 weeks is too early to tell...they all look like boys.  During my NT scan, they did like a partial anatomy scan, he looked at the stomach and bladder, and a few other things, but the main focus was that one measurement they are looking for.  My true anatomy scan was at 20 weeks and it lasted like an 1.5 hours.

good luck during the NT scan!

  • I was told to wait until 16 weeks before calling to schedule my anatomy scan, mine took an hour each time. Xander was stubborn and we went 4 or 5 times to get all the images the doctors wanted.

Holy crud wow really!! Well the hospital we are going to is extremely well know for it's state of the art neo natal unit and obstetric services so you never know, but I looked over my scripts for the scans and it does look like I schedule the anatomy scan after the NT.

It's funny you bring up the LEEP I talked about that with my nurse the last time I was in I am having the growth scans also but more to make sure there are no blood clots affecting my progress) They were not overly worried about my cervix though.

I am sort of excited about the growth scans though, it's like a little perk to me.

They've been awesome, I'm not gonna lie :D

I didn't realize you had had a LEEP.  Are you going to a separate u/s place for the NT and anatomy scans?  Make sure you tell them that you've had one.  I think they would check anyway, but FWIW, the u/s people had me come back about once a month from 16 - 28 weeks to make sure my cervix didn't change at all.

Yeah I had one I think about 7.5 years ago at the time I was so friggin' scared then a few of my friends that had laser and cryo done started coming out of the woodwork and I suddenly had this great support system. That is good to know thanks, it is a separate place (it's at the hospital I would delivery at).
