?? for moms and soon-to-be moms

I apologize if this has been asked before but...did you have/are you going to have the NT scan done? Why or why not? Our next appt is at 14 wks...which I think is too late for it anyway, right?

Again, sorry if this has been mentioned in the past but I guarantee I didn't even click on the post if it was. Not because I didn't care but because I could not have even told you what "NT" stood for 2 months ago.

  • We did. Our insurance covered it. So we did it for piece of mind, and to see the baby again.

  • we had it. i think 12-13 weeks is the only time frame it can be done (i could be wrong though).

not that it would have changed the outcome but we had it done because of james' brother's disability.  it's so rare and even though it wasn't genetic, we would have liked to have been prepared for it rather than waiting until the delivery to find out.

ETA: i also think it varies by state. i know my sister didn't have it done in california. she wasn't even aware of it.  i know in jersey it's pretty standard. every single person that i know here had one.

This.  We did it at 11 weeks, I think it's from 11-14 weeks?

  • I literally just found out moments ago the full integrated scan is covered so we are doing it. If only the quad scan was covered I was not sure I would want to do it because of all the false positives, but since we have the NT covered as well we will.

I can't say it would change anything we would do but after thinking about this and talking it over with dh a lot we decided we want to do it, mostly because trisomy 18 can lead you down quite a horrific road.

  • No because I think someone dropped the ball and didn't tell us about it in enough time (told us at 13.3). It gave us like 3 days to do everything and determine if insurance covered it. We really thought about making it happen but decided to be okay with not doing it and just having the quad screen and anatomy scan.

  • No, our family history was pretty good and the scan would not have changed the outcome for us. Also, it was not covered by my insurance.

  • We chose to do it, not covered on our insurance either. It was about $250. We did it just incase something showed up we would know how to prepare our lives. I'd stay at home to care for LO, prepare for medical expenses, etc. We never thought about it in a neg. way. A good friend of ours had an amniocentesis & NT scan and it showed nothing, but her LO had Downs when he was born. Not to scare you or anything, but nothing is 100% guaranteed with these things.
  • We didn't do it.  My OB practice only recommends it for people who have risk-factors (family history, age, etc.).  We could have asked for it, but didn't.  We had a blood test ~16 weeks, and they checked the nuchal fold at our anatomy scan at ~18.5 weeks.

  • We did it, for a peace of mind, though it wouldn't of mattered. Our insurance also covered it, so we decided to do it. Plus to see her again! I remember the huge change in just a few weeks, she look liked a baby and not a little turtle !
  • I didn't have it done. We did the quad screening and were happy with that. My OB also didn't recommend that I have it done since I wasn't high risk.

  • we had it done...we mainly wanted to be prepared to face things before the birth.

  • We did it to be prepared, to see the baby, etc, but I really wish we wouldn't have.  They can only tell you your odds and it has caused me so much worry.  I have my genetic counseling tomorrow and an amnio scheduled for Monday.  I was told from the amnio that I would know for sure, but that doesn't sound like it is the case.  I need to verify this tomorrow.

If the results of the test will alter your plans or if they wouldn't and you're comfortable/able to deal with abnormal results, then go for it.

From my experience, I wasn't prepared to hear poor results and the ultrasound to "see the baby" turned into a sad event.  From that ultrasound I can only picture the "thick neck" there was nothing happy or exciting about it.

    Sorry to be a downer.

  • Thanks ladies. I still don't know if I'm gonna do it.

  • Our insurance covered it so I didn't see any reason not to do it. Got to see Jacob and, like others, we wanted to be prepared if there was something to be concerned about. We snuck in right under the deadline -- 14 weeks.
  • Nope, just did the quad screen.  The only u/s we had was the anatomy scan.

  • Were you all warned that the NT scan can cause a m/c? We were told there's a 1/270 chance.
    Baby Birthday Ticker Ticker
  • The NT scan is just a longer u/s....  so no, no one ever mentioned a m/c risk.  I'm confused.  Where did you read/hear that?
  • The NT scan doesn't have a risk of miscarriage, it is a non-invasive ultrasound.  The amnio and the cvs do have the risk, which is the next step (optional) if your NT scan comes back abnormal.

The gyn told us that. Unless I misunderstood.

Maybe this is what they were referring to. I dunno. Now I'm confused.

the nt is just an u/s where they measure the fold in the neck by looking at the screen. no risk of miscarriage at all.  although my nt also involved 2 blood tests. but still, no risk.

    the amnio. yes.
