Father-in-law has stroke one week after wedding..

As all of you may know my H and I got married on December 11th and the very next saturday (the 18th) my father-in-law had a stroke.  He is still in the hospital and can not swallow and has lost all control of his bladder.  Yesterday they surgically put a feeding tube into his stomach because he kept pulling the one out that was in his nose along with pulling out his iv's.  His speech is very slurred and at times I honestly don't think he knows whats going on but then the next day he seems better.  Its been a roller coaster of emotions for the family.  Has anyone else been put in this situation a mere week after being married?  Its tough.  I feel so bad for my H, he is torn because this is supposed to be the happiest time of our lives as newlyweds but yet his dads health is not good and they don't know what the future holds.  I'm just trying to be strong and walk this bumpy road by my H's side.  Prayers are greatly needed and much appreciated.

  • That's terrible news - I'm so sorry.

My friend's dad had a stroke and was in a bad way for a while, but he has gradually improved and is now living a good, happy life.  I hope your father in law recovers.

Best wishes to you and yours.

Where we met - Mount Isa
a small mining town in the Australian Outback. Neither of us are from there but we both moved there in the second last year of highschool. He was moved next to me in maths class to stop him talking. It didn't work.
  • My dad had a hemorrhagic stroke about 2 weeks after my brother got married 2 years ago.  I also had a close family friend and an aunt pass away in the last 2 years after each having several strokes in their lives.

I can 100% relate to what you all are going through.  A little info on my dad's situation...

He had it at home and ambulance took him in.  First night he seemed ok but the next morning was bad, off and on.  He would end up getting very aggressive to the point that they had to tie him down and he was sedated for about a week.  When they would try to take him off he'd get aggressive again.  He was in ICU for about 2 weeks, in the hospital altogether for a month and a half.  His speech was severely affected and had very little use of his left arm/leg.  He couldn't use the bathroom for awhile, couldn't bathe himself, couldn't walk.  He's still alive now and has improved physically.

Anyway, I know how it is, and I hope everything improves for him and your family.  It's a difficult time, take care of yourselves and stick together for support.

  • I am so sorry to hear that.  I can only imagine how difficult this time if for you and your H.  Just try to be there for him and support him through this.  My thoughts will be with your family.

  • Our thoughts and prayers are with you.

Just remember to take sometime for yourself, also.  Being a rock is hard work and I've found that when times get tough, I sometimes need to remind myself that I'm just "living up to my vows."  Good luck to you, sweetie!
