WTF?  What's up with the lack of gymming?  Time to stop making excuses and get your rear in gear!

Does that help?

Andplusalso, do you have the link to that article about the fat burning zone to be a myth?  I need to send it to a friend.  TIA!

Re: ~*~raynes~*~

  • Haha, thanks!  I needed that.  I went tonight and busted ass for a good solid hour.  I have definitely lost a bit of strength in the last few weeks though.

    Do you mean this article?

There might be another one, I'll look tomorrow, I might have it bookmarked at work.

  • Thanks, I think that is what I was thinking of but if you have the other bookmarked, I'll take that, too!

Good job at the gym.  Now, time to make it a habit again  Wink

I'm trying to incorporate more cross training into my schedule.  I'm hoping this will get rid of my pain issues, but if not I'll go back to my family doctor and make her listen this time.  I'm only letting myself run every other day and it's SO hard.  It's what I crave.  You would be proud (and ashamed) at the same time of my attempts at lifting.

  • I think I remember seeing post about the "cardio" zone a while back in my reader, I'll take a look through later and see if I can find it.

Endurance running and heavy lifting are kind of opposites on the fitness scale (in that they have opposite goals, endurance running requires efficiency of motion, heavy lifting strives to be inefficient), but IMO runners can definitely benefit from more strength work.  I mean, look at Breezy, she's a distance runner AND a heavy lifter, so you certainly can do both.

If you need some ideas for lifting programs, the new book in the NROL series looks really good.  It's called The New Rules of Lifting for Abs, and while that sounds like a billion crunches, it's not.  It more so focuses on balance and core stabilization.  It might be worth a look.

Do you have one side that bothers you more than the other?  If so, maybe try more single leg stuff to help bring the bad leg up to par with the good one?

  • I know that the goals of endurance and lifting are opposites but I'm just looking to be more well rounded.  Not necessarily going to jump into a hardcore heavy lifting routine but doing various body parts, heavier, a few times a week and core work.

Honestly, my pain issue is ridiculous.  It's my left hip, right groin and my left knee.  But my knee pain is only when I walk down the stairs and only after I have run.  Hip pain is worse after I run and the groin pain hurts at the beginning of running and I can't do lunges.at.all.  I can't do hanging leg raises because my groin hurts and it hurts to bring my right leg up to my body at all.  I'm kinda worried I have some sort of stress fracture.  I took a whole week off running and then scaled back dramatically (from 35 miles a week down to about 20)  When I go for massage, my RMT says my hip flexors are ridiculously tight and I almost cry when she works at them.

Right now, I would do more leg work but certain things just plain hurt.  Like I said, I can't do lunges at all.   Anything twisty hurts my hip.  I feel so broken but unless my doctor tells me stop, I won't stop running.

Ultimately, I know I have go back to my doctor and make her listen to me.  Last appointment was an epic fail (she focuesd on my knee and didn't even test ROM or anything)

    Sorry, just needed to vent.

  • Ah boo that's no good.

Maybe see if you can get in with a sports medicine doc (I have no idea if you'd need a referral for that or not) or a PT.

Do you have a foam roller?  I swear by mine, it might help loosen up your hips a bit between massages.  Tony Gentilcore has posted some really good hip flexor stretches on his blog in the past, but I can't find them right now.  I'll keep looking.

I'm sorry your doc sucks, that must be super frustrating.  Maybe next time you go in tell them when you're booking that you need a longer appointment to cover everything, and then bring a list of the stuff you want to talk about.  I know I always forget that I meant to say if I go in without a list!

  • Yeah,  I was wondering about a sports doc but have no idea how to go about it.  I did see a PT a few months back for my neck, not sure if I would need to be re-referred.  She's in the same place as my RMT (and I used to work with her at Shoppers) so I should just ask.  The only thing, now I'm going to be working at 3 hospitals and I won't have time to get in with her due to hours.

I don't have a foam roller, but I do have The Stick.  I'll try and look up some things I can do with that.

My doctor is so hit or miss.  I can go in with an issue and sometimes she's thorough, other times she blows me off.  Example - passed out in the shower at the gym (totally naked, awesome) - get sent for an EKG, shooting pains in my neck - get sent for an MRI to rule out MS, my tinnitus is getting really bad and I think my hearing has decreased - no testing, you're fine.  So I never know which way it's going to go.

Thanks for listening, it makes me feel better.
