HELP - need a topic for sociology paper

I am a terrible topic choser. Any of you ladies have any suggestions on what I could write my paper on? The assignment is:

Create a one-page list of three sociological topics that you would be interested in researching for the Research Project. They could include evaluating a social concern, issue, event or phenomenon-but it must be from a sociological perspective.

TIA

Re: HELP - need a topic for sociology paper

  • Hmmm. Well my husband was a Sociology major, and he works in community corrections.  You could do something about corrections, recidivism, how we as a society view offenders before, during and after incarceration and how our views/establishment help or hurt society as a whole.

I have strong opinions on these issues, but I think it would be an interesting paper. IMHO. Wink

Lots of love and continual explosions of babydust to my BG Besties! XOXOXOXO

  • I always get fired up about social views/expectations of women and their cultural roles.
  • This was my major, too, with a focus on criminal justice.  I did a paper about the corrections system.  :)

If I had to do one today, I'd probably pick something about how society has viewed immigration throughout history and if it follows a pattern.  For example, did people have the same views of Italian immigrants in the late 1800's/early 1900's as people do about Latinos today?  Depending on the length of the paper, a discussion of why society views it a certain way could fit in nicely.

If I felt more ambitious, I would love research Willmar, MN and see how native born U.S. citizens and the crazy high number of immigrants interact with each other.  According to what I've heard, the community has welcomed them relatively well.  I wonder what accounts for this and how it  compares to larger cities like St. Paul and Minneapolis.

  • How about something on homelessness? It's a huge issue from a social and economic standpoint and you could make it a broad topic or it would be pretty easy to focus down a topic to a specific group or issue (e.g. the working homeless, perpetuation of homelessness, utilization of programs to end homelessness, women and children and school issues related to this, how society donates their time/ money to "help" and whether it actually helps, panhandling, interpersonal relationships among the homeless and how this affects outcomes, healthcare availability/ utilization among homeless adults). The possibilities are endless. If this is a topic that interests you and you end up using it, let me know if you need some resources.

    Good luck on your paper!
