It's one of the things I'm trying to do to polish up for hopefully someday being invited to and rocking the socks off of the FS oral assessment (insert jokes about orally assessing things here if you will- MH always does).
On the walk over, my coworker asks if I'd be willing to join in on the "table topics" for the day because he was in charge of them. Basically, he stands up and introduces a topic and then picks someone to come up and give a two minute impromptu persuasive speech on the topic. I said I'd play along.
So table topics time comes and the first one is about Wikileaks, the second one was about the whole Navy Captain scandal in the news this week. Either of those I could have talked about with easy, but then he announces the third topic, something about the new Redskins coach promising a Super Bowl championship and then benching McNabb and only winning 6 games for the season...and he called me to talk about it. I started my speech off by saying "I start my remarks by pointing out that I have not seen a single Redskins football game nor do I even know how many games are played in a typical football season..."
Re: Went to my first Toastmasters meeting today...
Funny you posted this today because we just had a really good speaker today in my MBA class. His name was Joe Jones and I know he is in Toastmasters but I'm not sure if it's local. We also had to give a persuasion speech and I was doing good but was super nervous and then I got emotional because it was on life insurance.
Anyways I decided today that am going to join our work toastmasters club ....I've been meaning to do it but today's horrible speech just sealed the deal.
I also have a PowerPoint presentation that Joe did on presentations, it's really good if you want it just let me know and I can email it to you.

I'm sure it wasn't as bad a you think- we're our own worst critics! I think Toastmasters is a really good way to practice public speaking though so you should definitely check out your local chapter!
I'd love to check out those presentations. I'll PM you my e-mail address.
I think you can. They definitely gave me the option of whether or not I wanted to join table topics. They also asked if I wanted to speak at the next meeting, but it's just an ice breaker where I'm supposed to give sort of an autobiography and I definitely could have said no. It has helped my nerves that the group is pretty small though.
The very thought makes me want to throw up. I hate public speaking, which is horrible since I'm kind of in a job that makes me have to talk to all sorts of people. The Dr wants to have an open house some time soon and that makes me so ridiculously nervous, just thinking about it makes me sweat. Oy.
There is a local one here in Spring Hill, but I don't think I could go by myself. I did good to go to a running club myself- that was a huge step for me. Heck, going to a GTG was a big move for me.
Maybe I should pay more attention to what is going on around me and I would feel more comfortable going to something like that. The only thing I could tell you right now is what happened on Jersey shore last night.
I had never heard of it either. But, it sounds interesting. I LOVE public speaking. H and I took it in college together and both of us loved it. (hence the Mass Comm degree) I think I might look into it.
StingShark, I'm in Spring Hill maybe we could go together.
AH!
I will definitely think about it. I know it's something that I can benefit from, but ohmigosh, it makes me so nervous.
After I'm finished with school it is something that I may consider doing, I can't do anything until I'm done w/ school.
