Buying based on the companies beliefs.

I was reading a blog this morning, and she said this, and asked this question:

"I heard on the news this morning about companies taking political/social/religious stances publicly.  For example, in 2009 the CEO of Whole Foods said he was against the Obama health care reform.  And just recently fast food company Chick-fil-A supported a local pro-marriage conference.

So my question is,

Do you think companies should take these stances and make them public?  And more importantly, if you don?t agree with their beliefs, would you stop buying their products?  Or do you think, hey I don?t care; I just want my chicken sandwich!"

Re: Buying based on the companies beliefs.

  • Well, IDK, unless an issue directly impacts that business I don't understand why a company would take a stance, especially if the issue is controversial like gay marriage.

And no, company beliefs don't sway my decision when shopping.

  • I don't buy based on a companies beliefs either. I have no idea what the beliefs are of most places that I shop.

However, my MIL bases her shopping on their beliefs. Ex: We had them over one weekend and we were eating something involving ketchup. She looked @ the ketchup bottle, made a face, and a noise of disaproval then used the ketchup. BIL says, No Mom, it's not whateverherbrandsheuses...

Then he proceeds to say that she won't buy a certain kind of ketchup bc of the companies beliefs. She feels the same way about GE products, various other things, and Publix. She huffs & puffs that we shop @ Publix. I think her beef w/ publix is that she used to deliver to them and she never felt like they treated her right.. She was an independent truck driver, I'm not sure how she thought they should treat her, but she wasn't employed through publix.

  • LOL Kathy. Chris was telling me over the weekend that he needed to take a ratchet back to Sears bc it was broken. He said craftsman has a life time guarantee, but the last time he tried to take something back to sears he had to cause a scene to get them to exchange. He says, "I told them I'll never buy another craftsman product again...and I haven't." I laughed at him.

To him, it's just the point. To me, it's whatever. You aren't hurting anyone but yourself.

  • I won't not shop somewhere because of the company's beliefs, but I am a picky shopper.  We won't shop at Wal-Mart, but that is becuase it is dirty and whatnot there and Luis was treated horribly when he worked there - I don't want to support something that will treat other people the same way, if I can help it.  I LOVED working for Target, and if they paid better, I would still be there.  We don't buy from McDonald's for obvious reasons.  I stop by there occasisionally to say hi to my friends who are still trapped.

But this reminds me of a lady we used to go to Church with and my family still knows her.  She said that she won't shop in Target because "it's run by heathens and they don't let the Salvation Army ring bells outside."  If only she knew how much volunteer work I did when I worked there!  It was so much fun to work with so many great charities!
