Will I get libido back after going off pill?

Any thoughts? I'm going to stop the pill at the end of this pack and start charting using FAM and condoms. Just wondering if anyone has gone off the pill and felt an increased sex drive (I hope)

  • I stopped BCP in November and noticed an increase in my sex drive right away.

  • I went off BCP and an antidepressant simultaneously because we are TTC. I noticed a HUGE increase in my libido following!! :) Not sure which one it was, maybe both! Good luck to you!

  • I wondering the same thing! Glad to hear that from all the replies. But we're not TTC, has anyone noticed a change by switching brands maybe? or types? I really would like to be "in the mood" more often but don't really want to hastle with condoms all the time...
  • Did anyone go see a Dr. before going off pill? or did you just stop?

You really don't need to see a Dr before stopping. Just stop after you take the last pill of your pack. If you were on them for any reason other than to prevent pregnancy (like you had severe periods or something), then maybe you'd want to consult with them first. My mom is an OB and this is what she told me. Good luck!

  • Totally hear ya about not wanting to mess with condoms. Have you read TCOYF? You could switch to a lower hormone brand, but I don't know if it would help your libido. I'm on one of the lowest hormone pills and I notice that my libido is gone.
  • I went off BCP and switched to FAM and condoms over two years ago and my drive came back the next month. I was hoping it would but I was surprised that it came back that quickly. Made my DH happy. :)

I had this problem about 5+ years ago.  I spoke to my Ob/Gyn who prescribed me Necon 1/35 - it is a lower dose and my drive is the same as when I was off the pill (for about a year).  Another plus?  I have barely any cramping, and my periods last 1-2 days.

  • I really want to go off bc in hopes that my sex drive would return, but there is absolutely no way that dh and I could have a child right now. I know so many people are a fan of NFP, but because having a child at this point would be horrible news for us, I can't even rationalize not using a contraceptive. Besides the fact that before I went on bc, my periods were extremely irregular. But boy, do I fantasize about going off the pill :)

  • I went off the pill 5months ago and for me it took about a week to notice I had an insane sex drive. My DH was more then happy.

I did notice while I was on the pill I could have cared less if we had sex often, but now its an everyday thing for us.

    Good Luck!

  • I went off the pill for the same reason. My sex drive did increase but not a whole lot. Probably because I have a stressful job. We use spermicide suppositories for 5 days before I ovulate and 1 day after. I've been using spermicide for years and never had a pregnancy so I trust it but its not for everyone.
  • I had the same issue but since I'm in the same boat we can not have a baby right now I worked with my OBGYN and kept stepping down to lower and lower hormones, I am on Yaz now and it's not as fast returning as it was when I went off bc to check but my sex drive is coming back.

  • YES!  Mine was super low too, like I never wanted sexual contact at all.  After getting off the pill I am back to my feisty self.

  • Sometimes I wonder if one of the reasons BCPs work is because it keeps us from even wanting to have sex!
  • I am so glad to hear this, because I was wondering if I was the only one/imaging it.  I felt like I had much more desire for sex before the BCP, but I didn't know if it was all in my head. I look forward to going off it it and getting back to me!
  • Wow.  I'm literally in tears right now reading all these!!  Why?  Because I thought it was just me!!!  I never even thought about the fact that before my husband and I married, and I wasn't on the pill, I wanted him SO much more than I do now.  We were together for a little over a year before we got married and we didn't have sex.  I didn't get on the pill until almost 2 months before we got married.  Before the pill, we both found it so hard to wait.  I wanted to rip him to shreds anytime I was around him.  haha.  Now, we're married and we can have all the sex we want, yet, I'm never really that much in the mood.  I've been so disappointed and depressed about this but I never thought about the fact that my pill could be the cause.  I honestly thought something was wrong with me.  I'm about to turn 30 in just a couple of weeks and I thought, wow, is it just over me?  LOL.  I'm truly so happy to read all of these replies and know that I can do something to get my sex drive back and be what I know my husband desires from me!  Thank you all!!  Big Smile
  • I'm so happy to read all these responses!! I've been on the pill since I was 15 due to heavy/irregular cycles and endometriosis. I'm on Yaz now and I liked it in the beginning, but now I just feel "blah." My husband & I are newlyweds so it's really depressing to not really ever feel in the mood. I WANT to want to have sex, but my mind and my body aren't on the same page. We're not quite ready for kids yet, so I'm going to see about other methods of BC. If getting off this pill can improve our sex life, that would be the best thing ever!! Good luck to all the other "low libido" ladies : )
  • I have been feeling the same way for a while now, and I actually thought that I was no longer attracted to my DH, which saddened me because I love him to death and we have gone through alot to be together. Until one day I actually spoke to my OB GYN and she informed me it was definitely the BCP. I was on Yasmin for 2 years but it gave me horrible cramps and the side effects was not good for me. I switched to Lutera, which is a very low estrogen pill. I broke out the first time i used it, but nothing since and I have been on it for just over 2 years. The downfall of this pill is the low sex drive. I do find that 1 week before my period I am horny and we have more sex in that week than we do any other week. I would love to get off the pill and start TTC, but its not the right time for us either. I guess your body will tell you what works and what does not. Good Luck
  • Low or loss of libido is a know side effect of the pill (any formulation/brand).  For those who mentioned that they don't want to mess with condoms, you can use NFP.  You learn how to track your fertility and abstain during your fertile period (about 1 week of the month) if you don't want to conceive.  And if you do want to conceive, you know when to optimize your chances!  It also works for those who have irregular cycles too.  When a couple is dedicated to following all the rules for avoiding pregnancy and when they've been properly trained, it's as effective as the pill.  I've heard that Taking Control of your fertility is highly recommended, but I've never read it so I can't say one way or the other.  If it's really important that you not conceive, then I recommend a class.

Here are links for the various methods (and you'll find info on how to find a teacher and/or class):

  • I went off the pill for this reason (switched to the copper IUD) with great results!

Has any one tried an IUD?  Mine has been a great.  I haven't noticed my sex drive decreasing at all and I haven't have had a period since I got it.  You can also have it removed and then get pregnant right away.  My sister used it for PMS and found that it helps a lot.  You will need to go to the doctor to get it put in and make sure to talk to your doctor about the different kinds.  It is MUCH easier than condoms.

  • My husband and I talked about this just yesterday. I am not taking my shot next month and hope that I can get in the mood again. Our first year was a let down in this area without a doubt!
