BF Moms....

I know this has been discussed before, but I forget what everyone had said. What do you recommend to store breast milk in? Also, what didn't work for you?

Re: BF Moms....

  • I've only used the Lansinoh plastic bags; easy to store in the freezer and I never had any problem with leaks.

  • I stored mine in the Medela bottles (or any bottle that had a lid and hooked up to my breast pump).  But then again, I never produced enough to have a freezer stash.....had I produced enough I would have used the bags to freeze.

I also bought the ice cube tray thingys but they looked like too much of a hassle.  I thought I was going to use them when I made my own baby food.  Making baby for for Macy lasted about a week......LOL

  • we used these.  the nicu provided them and gave us tons when we were discharged.

  • I used the Medela ones that went with my pump.

BTW, if, once she's here, you have any issues, I have a good friend who is a Lactation Consultant.  She saved my BFing experience, so I talk her up to anyone who will listen.

I wished I seeked the help of a lactation consultant.  BF was much, much harder than I ever imagined it would be!

  • I only pumped because my guys were in the NICU for a month and I NEVER had a freezer stash...but...one of the lactation nurses had told me not to use the bags.  It was something about the proteins/milk getting stuck to the side of the bag...I dunno!  I thought it sounded a little wonky myself and I have no clue if there is any truth to that but had I been able to freeze I would of used those little bottles that the hospital gives you with the caps on them.  I loaded up on those puppies thanks to our lovely NICU stay.  You can wash them and reuse them too.

I used these too.  I have millions of these little puppies.  As a matter of a fact I still have 5 oz of BM in the freezer and I just can't bring myself to dump it even though I know it's expired.

  • I used the lansinoh freezer bags. I would pump into medela bottles and then transfer and store. I wish we lived closer because I bought way too many boxes when they were on sale and still have extras even after pumping and freezing for a year.

  • I used the lansinoh freezer bags too. I tried another brand once (maybe Gerber?)and I hated them. Lansinoh bags were sturdy enough to hold their shape, which made transfering milk from the bottles you pumped into a little easier.

  • Another vote for the Lansinoh bags. They were the best I tried.

BTW, I agree with PPs that BFing was really hard in the beginning, and I found that I really needed the support I got, ESPECIALLY IN THE HOSPITAL. The nurses saved BFing for me, for sure.

When I pump at work, I use these and dump them in to the Lansinoh bags. I've had the experience once (and heard of others having similar experiences) of the Lansinoh bags getting small rips/leaks when the milk is thawing, but other than that, I've had no issues and just try to be extra careful now.. I waaayyyy prefer them to the Medela Pump and Save Bags, which I use on my drive home from work (because they tape to the pump). They only store 5 ounces, which is less than I can sometimes pump early in the day, and they almost never seem to completely close. I haven't frozen milk in them, just use them to pump, then transfer the milk to bottles for the next day.

I don't know if you've read about ways to freeze the milk, but laying the bags (if you use them) flat saves a ton of space and makes them easy to stand up later and sort. I've also read that women stack them in gift bags, cut a slit in the bottom of the gift bag and that way they are "dispensed" in order of date pumped, which is kind of cool if you have the room to do that.

  • Thanks everyone for your help!

I am planning on renting a pump from the hospital, the reviews online were all bad about the Lansinoh bags, I am glad to hear that some people have had good experiences with them.  I work from home but my mother will be watching Lila while I have to run errands for my business (which is once or twice a week) and I will need to have something stored. I think I am going to register for the Lansinoh bags and a set of the Medela bottles and see which works the best.
