NER: Halloween stupidity

When I was growing up, we went trick-or-treating on Halloween night, after dark, regardless of the day of the week.

Where I live now, the municipalities all set an "official time" for trick-or-treating. It's generally not on Halloween (unless maybe it falls on a Sat or Sun), and it's during daylight hours. This year, our town's is this Sunday from 2pm to 4pm. I cannot see the fun in getting dressed up five days before Halloween and walking around in broad daylight. Apparently, this is for the "safety of the children." WTF? Aren't parents supposed to be going with the young children anyway? I don't understand why people follow the official time. What is the city really going to do if everybody went trick-or-treating on Halloween anyway?

I had never heard of this silly practice until I moved here. Is anybody else's town this dumb? Or is it just Wisconsin?

  • Harrisburg PA does TOT on Thursday.

I think the whole thing is insane.  Can you imagine if someone suggested changing the main activity of a Christian holiday?

"All Easter Egg Hunts shall henceforth commence on Holy Thursday."

  • That is stupid. Halloween is Oct. 31!! I'm not answering my door for trick-or-treaters on any other day.

If they're concerned about safety, the kids should go out before sunset and/or there should be parental supervision. We don't change the clocks back until November this year, so that should help.

  • I[ve never heard of this!  Of course, most kids in my area seem to go to the mall for TOT.  BOR-ING!

Anything you can achieve through hard work, you could also just buy.
  • Ugh, i hate things like this. Way to take all the fun away from Halloween. In fact, what's the point of Halloween at all if you're going to go trick or treating on a totally different day, in broad daylight? I would just ignore it and take my kids on the real day anyway. In my  neighborhood growing up, parents always took their small kids right at dusk before it got dark anyway, and the older kids were fine after dark. So dumb.

I've been meaning to say this forever, but I SPPH the Wayne's World reference.

    So it goes.
  • Milwaukee has certainly had its share of visitors. The French missionaries were coming here as early as the 1600s.
