Re: NER: American Girl says Farewell to Samantha!!
It's so funny - I had never heard of American Girl dolls until my niece got one when she was 5. She's 8 now. Were they popular back in the day, or am I just really old (at 34)?
It's always sad when pieces of your childhood disappear...
I am a runner, knitter, scientist, DE-IVF veteran, and stage III colon cancer survivor.
I was a freshman in highschool! Eee gads
I do remember getting a first edition cabbage patch doll. I think my mom took a second job to get it for me, but I got it!

It makes me sad that they are doing this, probably to make way for another modern type girl.
I had Kristin. And I agree, it was the best christmas present ever! I still remeber opening the box...ah memories.
NO!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I had Samantha and Felicity
Caity had Molly and Addy and moira had Kirsten.
SAD!

Aww, I had the original 3. Molly, Samantha and Kirstin. Samantha was probably my favorite!!!
Then I got too old and never got into all the newfangled dolls...
No more Samantha?? That's crap!
They say they're making more historical dolls, but still. ?Very sad. ?What time frame would they do? ?I guess they could do a 20s doll or an eve of WWI doll, since they always choose a year that ends in a 4. ?
I loved Kirsten and Felicity, but I also loved Molly. ?I had all of them until they started introducing too many new ones, but I remember even when I was little, Samantha was the last one I wanted because she was so rich. ?I thought she was probably snobby and didn't want to pay enough in taxes! ?American Girls: Teaching Class Warfare at a Tender Age. ?;)
booooooooooooooooo
I had a Samantha too. wait. does that mean her value just went up?!
OMG! I bet you're right. And we all probably have the Samanthas made by the original Pleasant Company, where all the clothes say, "Made in West Germany."
I almost posted about this yesterday! I was going to ask if it's wrong to buy Nellie's coat for sst, even though she's years away from playing with American Girl dolls. I loooove it -
I was 5 years old in 1986, so I was right in the target market for the original dolls. I had Molly when I was about 8 and absolutely loved her. I got Felicity a few years later when she came out, even though I was getting a bit old for them (I think my mom was already looking ahead to future grandchildren haha). I loved Felicity's gorgeous Colonial dresses, though. In fact, I still have the original dress Felicity came in which is apparently discontinued now (her original dress was kind of like orangey-brown and now it's a purple one).
I don't like the modern dolls - I think it kind of defeats the purpose. I was sad when Pleasant Company was sold to Mattel.
I saw that Felicity's original dress is gone! It was so pretty (and so much more realistic, says the Colonial history dork).
TTT, I think you should get Nellie's things for sst! I was trying to come up with a way that it would be okay for me to purchase Nellie, but I have no children, none on the horizon, and am 25 years old. I may be crazy cat lady, but I refuse to be crazy doll collector lady.
I never noticed that! I'll be checking for that!
