that was interesting

so..we just got home from our anniversary cruise, and we had a blast!

those of you along the east coast know of the huge blizzard from the day after christmas...so we spent the whole christmas day watching the weather, and talking to the airline. Finally, christmas night, we decided to drive.

we left sunday morning at 5:30am (with SIL and her bf), and we drove from CT to miami...26 hours of travel time to make it to our ship on time.

good thing we did it, because our flight ended up being canceled, and we get the whole amount back. It was interesting to drive right through the snow in VA and NC, especially since we didn't even see snow until VA.

I'll have a full review of the trip in my blog tmrw probably, and my pictures are going up on FB as we speak.

  • That sucks you had to drive through the snow and your flight was cancelled, but great you still got to go on your cruise :)  Can't wait to read the review and see pics :)

  • Glad you made it to your ship!!!! We were SO thankful we ended up not going to visit H's family in Texas as we would have been stuck there! NY was horrible!!!

  • I'm glad everything worked out and you had a great trip, and just think about years from now, that road trip will surely go down in family history. What an adventurous 1st anniversary! :)
  • Woah, that drive sounds crazy!  But I'm soooooooo jealous of your trip.  How long was the cruise?  And where did you go?  H has never been on a cruise, and I'm thinking we should go on at least one before we start with the babymakin'.

we loove cruises. it was a 4 night to the bahamas...key west, nassau and coco cay.

we actually already booked our next for august. 5 nights to bermuda.

don't get me wrong, we love to go somewhere and just relax in one place, but there is soo much to do/see on a cruise...and the prices are great.

  • That sounds amazing!  Do you think, in general, cruises are cheaper than all-inclusives? It's been so long since I've been on a cruise - food is included, but drinks aren't...right?  We're pretty big drinkers, so I fear it would be outrageously expensive for us.

  • That sounds awesome (minus the 26 hour drive, but at least you made it!) I've never been on a cruise but I have a feeling our next vacay is going to be one. We decided that this vacation was too cold and it's time to actually wear a bikini on a vacation lol.

Which cruise company do you normally go with? What about them do you like so much? I'm not a lay-around type of person, so I could never do an all-inclusive and just lay on the beach, but is there even that option on a cruise if I wanted to?

  • I've only been on Royal Caribbean, and right now, we're going to stick with them. Every time we go on a cruise, we talk to people who have been on other comparable lines, and they say royal caribbean is the best they've been on. The nicer ones are princess and celebrity, and we'd like to go on one of those someday.

I think that if you're looking for a cheap, tropical vacation, cruises are the way to go. All food and activities are included, and there's ALWAYS something going on. You can see more than one place, and do as much as you choose.

For food, they have everything from a buffet meal to room service to a fancy-ish dining room where they put the napkin on your lap haha. You can order as much food as you want...for example...one night I ordered three appetizers and two entrees.

For activities, they have lots of bingo, where on the last one, they give away a cruise. they have a fitness center and a spa, a pool and hot tubs. the bigger ships even have an adults only pool and hot tubs that have a bar right there. We never had an issue with the adults only area being too crowded.

At night, they have tons of bars. the bigger ships have a sports bar, irish pub, dance club, champagne bar, and others. you can really pick what you like. they also have a piano bar, with a piano singer that is always fantastic.

they also have fun game shows like the newlywed game, where they pick three couples, and its always hilarious. They also have battle of the sexes, and this insame game called quest, where people end up doing things you wouldnt expect. we got bronze metals haha.

overall, we decided that we always want at least 1 cruise day on our future cruises, because its a nice chance to just relax, see the boat, and take everything in. without the cruise day, it's hard to see and do everything that you want.

in my opinion, the price can't be beat. In april, the cruise that we just went on goes for $300 per person. you can also go on lastminutecruises.com to find really good deals.

ps...as far as drinks go, I wouldn't say they are any more expensive than what we're used to here in CT. I had a vodka tonic for $5.50, and a bahama mama for $6.25. I actually felt like their fruity tropical drinks were cheaper than what we're used to. Just be careful about the special glasses haha. Beer is the only thing thats a little more expensive. about $4 for a budlight bottle. DH, SIL and her BF ended up sharing buckets of 6 beers for $26 (that included tip).

pps...they always add tip into your drink bills, so there's no need to add more. but you can if you want.
