XP: Cat peeing problem, HELP! (a little long)
Our female cat is 1 and a half years old and we've had her a year. Every 2 months or so she has an episode where she will pee/poop on the carpet in rooms that are very very close to the litterbox. We spot treat with the enzyme cleaner, steam clean, then spray with Feliway (supposed to calm cats and deter urination,) and then cover the spot with a towel and tin foil (the noise is supposed to keep them away from stepping on the spot again) until it dries. We've been leaving the foil an towels in place for a week or so after, but recently discovered that my female (we have a 4 yo male also) is CHEWING and eating the tin foil. Male cat is very well behaved. She won't pee on the spots as long as the tin foil is there, but soon after we move it (so she stops EATING it) she will poop or pee on the spot again. I'm not sure what to do. We even tried putting the litterbox ON the spot she was peeing, and slowly moving it back after a few weeks, and she peed 3 FEET in front of it the other day.We had her tested medically and there is nothing wrong with her, DH cleans the box twice a day, and we have 3 boxes (2 large and 1 small) in various places in the house, so I'm not sure what is causing her to avoid the box. Is she just mentally handicapped? I can't imagine getting rid of her, but this needs to be fixed. Please tell me someone has a magic cure....

I have the same issue with my cat. She's an only cat and she never went out of her litter box until about 6 months ago. I figured out that it was because she didn't like the location of the box. Once I moved it, we were good for a while until I realized she was going near, but not in the box. I bought a new box, a new litter, starting scooping out her box daily, added a Feliway to the bedroom because its where she spends most of her time and I started covering the areas where she would go with a plastic trash bag.
Its working for the most part. Walmart carries a Pet & Kids cleaning solution thats equivalent to Nature's Miracle but a larger bottle and less money. I've used that to get rid of the odor and stains and its worked really well.
How long has it been since you took her to the vet? Maybe something has happened since then. If she's eating the foil, it could be food related. Since shes going on the carpet, she may want a softer litter or newspaper instead. There is a type of litter thats supposed to attract the cat to the box. I haven't used it though. Is there a cover on any of the litter boxes? Thats something else I realized my cat did not enjoy.
My vet determined that its a behavioral thing for my cat and said that if she continues to do it, they have a medicine that you apply to the outside of the cats ear. It supposedly works wonders for litter box issues. I don't know what its called, but I'd try every other suggestion and then before getting rid of her.
Edit: Out of curiosity, did this start after you got pregnant? I don't know if its coincidental or not, but a few of my friends with cats all had litter box issues when they were pregnant.

Something similar happened with my cat. Usually outside of litter box peeing is the way he tells us something is wrong. We took him to the vet several times, lots of tests, nothing wrong. So the vet gave him what he called Kitty Prozac (I dont remember the actual name for it). He was only on it maybe 1-2 weeks. It wasnt that he had issues of any sort, he said it just kind of resets parts of his brain. Sure enough it worked.
Hi there,
I'm having the same issue with my 10yr old cat. After having him tested by our Vet, she determined that it was a behavioral issue. Unfortunately, my cat HATES my husband (very jealous). We have him on kitty Prozac , the pills aren't expenses if your cat will take pills. Mine won't so I have to have a special trans dermal Prozac (placed inside the ear on fur-less skin). In our case, the Prozac has helped. However, he still has episods when he's mad.
Talk to your vet and see what they think. Perhaps Prozac may be a way to go. I hope this helps!
Good luck!
I will have to show your post to MH! he thinks I'm the only one (and it is definitely MY cat!) with a crazy cat that sometimes requires a little Rx cocktail!
