should they go with color of dishes or colors of the room? dishes we registered for are ivory (almost white) with yellow & black accent. dining room is earth tones, predominantly brown & gold. table is brown. for reasons too long & boring to explain here we are stuck for now with the room as is.
I did not give it a 2d thought until I got the dark brown mats home. (Chilewhich - i love them but they are $20-25 each)
dark brown is nice with the room but not so great with the dishes.
black is nice with dishes but not so great with the room.
Re: placemats - color
Welcome to the nest
Placemats are pretty inexpensive, so buy a few sets and change them out and then you won't have to worry about being married to a set that isn't quite perfect. I'd probably go with a yellow or ivory/white.

Thinking of doing cosmetic updates to a dated home? These were our costs.
As previous poster said... over thinking.
Placemats are where you can have some fun. How about a punch of color? Yellow and black would look great with a nice blue, teal, green etc. I always go into Williams Sonoma, PB, Target, CB just to see what placemats they have on sale.
When I worked for RH, for many years, I would tell clients to choose neutral colors for their dinning room chair fabrics for this exact reason. A $600 dinning room chair is an investment... a $8.00 placemat... not such a huge deal.
Have fun!
