Guess what ladies?

I am a momma! Baby G was born yesterday, 1.6.2011 at 6:58pm, weighed 7lbs 9oz and is 21 inches long.  He was born med free and in the water.

A couple pictures.  I'll of course share more later because we've been taking tons.

Here is the story:

I stared my bloody show Wednesday evening. Early Thursday morning, I started having contractions, but they really were not that painful and just felt a bit more intense than braxton hicks. By 9 am Thursday, I was in a definite pattern: 6 mins apart and about 45 second in duration, though really not that painful, but we decided to call our midwives at the Birth Cottage to let them know that I've had show and was contracting. They told us to keep them posted and that they would check in with us later on that day, and that we should plan on coming in at 4:1:1. By 11 am I had to concentrate through them, but they were about 5 and a half minutes apart, though they were lasting a minute to a minute and a half. My DH and mom were asking if they were hurt and I had no answer for them. Its really hard to, even now after the birth, to describe how they felt-I never had a point of reference for something like this before. So I just described them an intense. It was the only word that fit.

By 2:30 the midwives called us to check in and my contractions were just under 5 mins apart, so they asked if we wanted to come in. DH told them that we'd hang out at home for a while longer til 4:1:1 and we'd come in then. Well shortly there after, I had what was either an 8 minute long contraction, or else I was having coupling or tripling (basically back to back contractions). My mom then said that I needed to go in and DH agreed and called the midwives to tell them we were heading out.

We arrived at the cottage at 4, I was in the tub by 5 and he was born at 6:58p. I could not get comfortable to save my life. The only thing that was remotely satisfying for me was to bear down and push spontaneously. Somewhere during that time my water broke, and I kept saying "I'm peeing!" and DH and my midwife said no, no, thats your water breaking. Honestly, it felt like I was urinating, even as I sat in the water. In between two contractions my midwife asked if she could check me (my first ever internal) because she didnt want me pushing if I wasnt fully and she was concerned that I might be pushing through a lip of cervix. So I was checked, it was established that I was 9 with a bit of a bulging bag left and my midwife just let me be. As I finished up transition, that was the only moment that I yelled out "I can't do this!" and everyone was saying that "you are, you are!" and it was after that point that I really started pushing. The first few I didn't have quite down and my groans/yells were getting higher pitched instead of staying down low in my throat. Somehow I managed to listen to my midwife's instruction to make the sounds lower because they'd be more productive, and she was right. Once she told me that, my pushes were much more effective. Active pushing only lasted 25 mins and he was out. I was so focused I didn't even ask to pull him out, but its a good thing I didn't because he came out with his hand by his head, and my midwife had to do a bit of twisting/rocking him around after he crowned. Because he came out this way, I had a first degree tear and a couple lacerations. They said if he had not come this way, I wouldn't have torn at all. But I can't be mad-having only a first degree tear, needing only a couple of stitches, I am really fortunate.

We were then discharged to go home at 12:30 am after I was stitched and showered and both lil G's and my vitals were stable. Our stay at the cottage was a total of 8 and a half hours and it was so nice to go home to our own bed.

He is doing great and is such a lil angel. He needs a bit more practicing with breastfeeding, but today he has really latched on well a few times and seems to be getting the hang of it. And DH is just amazing. He was the type who was afraid of new babies before hand, but with his own he is a natural. So adorable to watch the two of them together. And he was absolutely perfect during my labor and delivery. He was just present enough, but gave me my own space to get into the zone and do what I needed to do. I couldn't have asked for a better birth partner!
