Extend laptop warranty?

Good morning ladies, I just bought a Sony Vaio laptop (VPCEB290X) last night from the outlet store after researching them for a while. It comes with a limited 90 day manufacturer's warranty but gives you the option to extend it for 1 or 2 years. Is this recommended? I have 30 days to add it on if I want to but am not sure. I've read mixed reports so I thought I'd get your opinion on it.

I read the post below on the anti-virus software and am hesitant about the free anti-virus software.  I saw that AVG Free was recommended and saw it got glowing reviews from cnet.com but can't get over the "you get what you pay for" mentality. Why are these programs free & others, like Norton, you have to pay for?

Also, I was considering an online backup site like Carbonite or Wozy to replace my ancient external hard drive that isn't big enough to back up my new laptop's hard drive.  Again, I saw all these "free" sites offering online backups but am weary about them for the same reason.  Any advice/recommendations on these types of sites would be greatly appreciated!

TIA!

Re: Extend laptop warranty?

  • I think it depends on how well you take care of stuff, the chances of something happening to it, and how much you paid for it.

For example. I wouldn't get a warranty on my iPod, but I have AppleCare for my MacBook, just in case. I never lose anything or spill anything (on electronics).  For me, it's not worth it.  If you want peace of mind, it probably is.

Do you mind me asking how much you paid?  How much is the warranty?

  • I paid $800 for the computer and for a 1 year extended service plan it's $70, for 2 years it's $125.  Like you, I take really good care of my stuff & this warranty will only cover manufacturer's defects. They do have one that will cover cracked screens/spills & stuff like that for $250 for (2) years.  Given the cost of the laptop, I probably should do at least a year just for the peace of mind.

  • You can get  a 3 year from Square Trade for about 129, it's the best warranty company out there. Code "Santa" will get you 20% off until the 10th of this month.
