Has anyone been to Nantucket?
We're looking into going there in September for our anniversary.
My husband fears it will be like "a retirement community".
We are 23 and 25 - is there anything to do?
TIA!

Re: Nantucket
My main concern about going in September is that some of the restaurants and shops will be closed for the winter by then so there might not be too much to do. But, really, it is a cute island that is still very undeveloped which I liked.

I've only been on a day trip to Nantucket, but it did not strike me as a retirement community. However, it did not seem to have as much potential for nightlife as Martha's Vineyard does. Nantucket is also probably the more expensive of the two islands.
What time in September would you be going? Most places on both Islands don't totally shut down until Columbus Day weekend, but the closer you get to the end of September, it does seem like there's less to do.
Have fun whatever you decide!
we watned to go 9/9 - 9/15
We were both born and raised in Austin, TX and are really just looking for somewhere to go that we've never been. I've been to New Mexico, California and Florida (all for a week at a time) and he has been to Colorado, New Mexico, Wyoming, Montana and Washington (for no more than a week long at a time).
Any suggestions (really anywhere within the nation).
Thanks for replying, I really appreciate your help.

What kind of things would you like to do on your trip?
At that time in September, most of the things on Martha's Vineyard and Nantucket would still be open. Unless its unseasonably warm, it would probably be a little cool for swimming. But, both islands have some great bike paths and scenery. Also great shopping, even though not every shop is necessarily affordable.
At least on Martha's Vineyard, there are some fun sailing tours, good restaurants and bars, etc. - plenty to do for a week, though less active than, say, travelling to a city.
I bet the Berkshires and Vermont (Burlington, perhaps?) would offer a lot of the same types of activities, just with more woodsy scenery than beach-y scenery.
I really just want to see something I've never seen before. The seclusion of Nantucket attracted my romantic side. The woodsyness (it's a Mina-ism) of Berkshire made me think it would be nice to walk through it and really just enjoy the scenery. Lots of good photography options. My husband likes to hike, so maybe we could do that too.
Shopping is going to happen wherever we go, LOL, we're expecting to put aisde some aside just for shopping.
My goal in our vacation is to see something neither of us have seen before and to be in awe. Maybe go out drinking a couple of nights. Have something to see during the day.
