Hey guys - I'm back!

Hi everyone!

So I'm back from Europe and had an amazing time! Somehow we completely lucked out, we got in to so many of the tourist attractions for free just because we went on the right day (which we had no prior knowledge of) and on our flights for some reason they were offering free WiFi and alcohol lol. Because of this we were able to splurge on some amazing meals (one each in Paris and Rome)

I think I walked more than I have in my entire life. We decided to save money and not buy metro passes and just walk everywhere but our feet were so sore towards the end of the trip. In Paris we did NYE under the Eiffel Tower, but they didn't do fireworks this year (super bummed!) but it was still beautiful, and such a crazy crowd. We also did a lot of tours of the churches and the Louvre but we wandered around in some really beautiful parts of the city and just had a great time. Thankfully I spoke enough French that I could have every conversation that I needed to and they were very welcoming. I didn't have the typical ('oh the french hate americans') experience that so many people talk about. Our hotel was a typical little Parisian hotel and was very cute but small.  Our entire bathroom was about the size of a tub. We also didn't climb the Eiffel tower because it was sooooo cloudy we wouldn't have been able to see anything, and it costs about 30 Euro to do it (per person). Our anniversary in Paris was awesome.  We had our splurge meal that night and we told the restaurant it was our anniversary and we got free appetizers and dessert :) H wasn't as in love with Paris as I was though because he doesn't speak any French and I think he felt a little isolated.

Rome was better for him because they all spoke English openly. There was also more to see and do without standing in lines because there are so many ruins.  We spent one day at the Colisseum and the ruins around that area and then the other full day at Vatican city.  We climbed to the Cupola on St. Peter's Basilica and had the most amazing view of the whole city.  Our hotel in Rome was also amazing.  When we had our splurge meal in Rome we were the only two in the restaurant because the city wasn't very crowded.  The chef made us these delicious little complimentary appetizers (I have no clue what it actually was) and we had private serenade by the pianist.  Completely romantic and amazing. But we had to come home and I'm super glad to have my dogs back - we missed them sooooo much!

Anyway, sometime today I'm going to put all (1000 or so photos) up on snapfish and I'll let you all know when they're up.  Hopefully I can separate them out by attraction so it's not just a huge mass of photos.

Re: Hey guys - I'm back!

  • welcome back!! sounds like you had an amazing time, congrats!!!! that's too bad you didn't climb the eiffel tower though! that's one thing i did that i'm so dont regret, i almost backed out since i'm so afraid of heights and it turned out i felt safer at the top of the tower than i did halfway up! ha! it's such a pretty city, i hope to make it back someday to re-explore it on my own (vs. being there with a school chaperoned group).

Thanks to our wonderful RE our family is complete!
