We found out that DH was not accepted into the FAA to be an air-traffic controller *this time*. There is going to be another selection in March. My dad (who is an air-traffic controller) also said that something-or-the-other that Obama just passed could put a hiring freeze on the FAA that could last years. (We live in OH and if hired would be moving to FL or GA) So we're still in a kind of limbo are-we-staying-or-are-we-going kinda thing.
Monday night the in-laws call and tell DH that his late great aunt's house is for sale and his aunt and uncle are the executors of the estate and are willing to offer it to us for a great deal. A deal too good for us to pass up but at the same time, there is the possibility that we could have to move in the next year. If we can we're going to get it because everyone has pointed out that we need to deal with the "now" not the "possible"
There are a few major issues that keep me up at night thought. We don't even have a clue how much we can be approved for (finding out tomorrow) so it's possible we can't even get it financially And we have a lease at our apt through the end of July and in past experience they don't let you out of those without a fight.
My best friend and I went to look at the outside yesterday, DH and I finally get in Saturday morning. I'm dyyyyyyyiiiiinnnngggg to see the inside. Wanna see, please don't stalk me, lol.

That is a nice big house. Wow! Man I hate living in a HCOL area.
I had a really hard time pulling the trigger on our place and we had the stability of knowing that we were going to be staying for a long time. But like others said, if your plans change renting is always an option and shouldn't be too difficult with a house like that. If you get it as a steal you also might not lose any money if you have to turn around and sell it in a couple of years. All it really needs is a fresh coat of paint.
I must say though, I really do enjoy the wallpaper in the dining room. Your Aunt had decorating balls!

It's even BETTER in person, lol. DH's great aunt bought the house in '87 so I think that wallpaper was already there.
We totally love the house, we saw it yesterday morning. It has a nice half finished basement and all appliances, including washer and dryer are staying. It's going to need a lot of cosmetic work, but I'm gonna look into Pergo for the entire ground floor if we get it. It doesn't look like we'll have any trouble buying it, but the problem will be getting out of our apartment lease.
Congrats! It looks so charming. I also second the notion of thinking of the "now" and pouncing on this, but with real estate (I've quickly learned) it is good to consider the future slightly, in so far as whether you would re-sell the house (and in how long until then) or would you rent it out, and so therefore is it in a good school district, etc.
I have to also say that $90,000 for a three bedroom house made me crack up. Hubby and I have been online house stalking for a couple of months, and finally got to check out some places today...hahaha a 2bd/2ba in SF in the area we love is $599,000.
:-) Oh Cali.
