daycare and summer

Since DH and I are teachers we have the summer off which is great for Allie! I was wondering if we should still have her go like once a week(maybe half day) so she is use to seeing everyone and is not thrown for a loop when we go back in Aug? I want her to stay with us all summer however if this will make things easier on her then we will do it. Let me know what you think!

Re: daycare and summer

  • you might need to do this just to keep your spot at the daycare place.  i assume you have checked with your daycare to see what the minimum days she can go are as well.  some places are a two day a week minimum.

either way i think its good to have her go a little over the summer as well even if you are home.  it gives the two of you time together and also socialization with other kids for her.

    ITA with everything mentioned here.

  • I would send her at least 1 if not more days.  Its important for the babies to continue the routine they are used to. Otherwise, it will be a big production getting her ready to go back when you and DH have to return to work.  It will be hard on you and hard on her again, dealing with the separation, etc.

  • We don't have to keep her in at all to keep our spot. I really don't want to send her two days a week but I hear what everyone is saying. not sure what to do!
  • If you don't have to keep her in to keep your spot then don't.  Kids are resilient. She'll be fine.

DS is no longer in daycare (DH is out of work, so home with the kids), but when he was, we just kept him out of daycare for the summer.  Even sending him to daycare for two days a week was expensive, and with DH not earning a paycheck in the summer it didn't make sense to send him.  From what I remember, DS did fine with the transition (he was about 9 months old when he went back after summer break).  We planned on doing the same again the following school year, except that DH was not called back for the school year.  You can still allow your daughter to socialize by going to story time at the library; and maybe registering her for a class at Gymboree or something similar.  She'll be just fine.

    Good luck!

  • I think it really depends on your kid and how you feel the transition will be. I really wanted to pull Christian out of daycare when he first started for the same reason. I have the summer off and hated thinking about paying for something that we didn't really need. Well let me tell you how much I LOVED having 2 days to myself to do what ever the hell I wanted to. I saw friends, went out to lunch, worked out, etc. I realized that I am not SAHM material. I need to have time away from my kids to be able to have my own time. If I had to stay home with my kids all summer as full time care taker then I feel like I wouldn't get to enjoy my summer as much. IDK it probably sounds bad but I am a better mom when I miss them a bit.
